The first and only time I performed tracheostomy care on one of my patients was early this semester. It occurred during my second night shift the medical /surgical ICU level 2 step-down unit at Sunnybrook Hospital. A level 2 step- down unit means that the patients on the unit don not ventilators, and that the unit only intermediately receives patients with tracheostomies. It was my second night in a row, and I was eager to attempt tracheotomy care for the first time. In the room with me were my preceptor, the patient, and the patient’s sitter. I gathered all the necessary supplies and entered my patient’s room confident in my ability to perform the procedure. I was confident in my ability to complete the intervention as I had prepared by reviewing the textbook guidelines on tracheostomy care, watched an Evolve nursing skills step by step video, and had seen my preceptor perform the skill twice, the previous evening.
