My first experience teaching in classroom was during my senior year in college, I started learning the dynamics of teaching and learning as a volunteer chemistry tutor. As I helped other student’s puzzles over basic concept of chemistry, I gained tremendous amount of knowledge in an attempt to answer questions evolving from the discussion. That experience actually helped me to understand the teaching and learning are inseparable.

I’m currently working as a post-doctoral associate in Dr.Quitevis’s group and involved in mentoring two undergraduates in synthesis of ionic liquids and cellulose dissolution. I’m also working closely with two graduate students with their projects. I always encourage independent thinking and analytical reasoning to augment problem solving. I enjoy working closely with students to motivate them to intellectually develop their potential as an independent scientist. It was comfortably challenge themselves. Encouraging students to question basic concepts in textbooks as related to real life meaningful learning. I have found that senior undergraduate students learn better when they are challenged with problems that to their research interests, they are more fascinated with theoretical concepts that connect to their practical experience. I seek to motivate and inspire students to cultivate inquisitive attitude as they leave my classroom or the laboratory

Mr.Creech, my chemistry teacher, actually cares about his students. In an age of technology, it is easy to give your students a faux lab online and not the hands on stuff. Mr.Creech looks down on that and has said, "most kids aren't wired to learn that way". Every morning, you can find Mr.Creech in his classroom an entire hour early prepping for his upcoming lesson. He puts time and dedication into his job, unlike most teachers at school.…

I am currently student teaching in a 4th grade classroom at Sunset Elementary under my master teach, Alissa Nakaji. Upon my first day, I instantly fell in love with the dynamics of the classroom. The classroom had colorful posters explaining rules, consequences, inspirational quotes, and a list of roles for each student (changed weekly). This classroom feels more like a community of students striving together to have an optimal learning experience instead of just one teacher demanding and controlling the students. It is very autonomous and the teacher is involved only when needed.…

I attended Jane Addams Elementary School for my field experience hours. As I was attending this school, I started to think about when I was a student teacher at my elementary school. My freshman and sophomore year of high school, I had volunteered to do student teaching at my elementary school, and it was really tough for me because that was my first time ever teaching students at a fifth-grade level.…

Dear P&P Class Members: Previously I attended Juniata College in Pennsylvania where I received a BA in General History, Art History, and Museum Studies. My academic focus was not only on exhibition making and design but also WWII and pre-Impressionistic art. While at Juniata, I interned at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. where I learned the vast intricacies of the inner museum workings. Most of my teaching opportunities and experiences have happened outside of a traditional classroom and learning environment. From one-on-one to groups, my teaching has been less on the academic side and more on the life skills side ranging from students half my age to three times my age.…

Journalist, satirist and cultural critic H.L. Mencken once said, "The aim of public education is to fill the young of the species with knowledge and awaken their intelligence, and so make them fit to discharge the duties of citizenship in an enlightened and independent manner". However, in retrospect, my time within the Australian public education system has shown me that in Australia, this is not the case. Being a part of this system for the past thirteen years of my life, I have come to realise that our education system, powered by teachers who have the potential to inspire and innovate, have caged their students in cells haunted by repetition. We memorise facts to pass a test and forget about them later. We are trained to conform to the…
