Narrative Essay About English

It was August of 2012, I really don’t remember the exact day just know it was my first day of high school, and as everyone else going to high school was just another chapter in life you have to go through. Going into high school I honestly don’t remember how the hell I felt about it. I was happy, excited, nervous; everything in one feeling, but one thing I did know was that everyone kept in mind the same old shit every middle school teacher said about high school. From writing all the essays, to finding out who you really are and even my P.E teacher told jokes about having sex and making sure it was safe. Now let’s all be honest, only very few of us we’re ready for the actual learning part of high school. Everyone else, like me, probably didn’t …show more content…
I used to love reading and could deal with writing. Was writing my favorite thing to do? Hell no, but I had no problem with it, until my English 1 Honors class. Half way through the semester I knew I will hate reading and especially writing with a strong passion. You must be asking what happened, what was so bad about English 1? Let me tell you, remember when you first learn how to drive and your parent takes you out to some empty ass parking lot? It was like that, and everything you do they just yell and don’t exactly tell you what the hell you did wrong? The difference between writing and your parents teaching you how to drive is that eventually my dad actually told me what the hell I need to do right. As for my English teacher, I don’t even know what to say about him. He assigned us essays and readings like a typical teacher. I do it and turn it in by the due date like a typical student. He’d then go on and grade it and pass it out, but without any correction, just a grade in red ink with dumbass unnecessary notes that say “Better luck next time” or “Try a bit harder “. Imagine getting those throughout the year. At one point I really thought he was going to pull off some movie shit and magically make us better writers. I was wrong and just accepted the fact that I’m a horrible writer and that high school is going to be pretty long, especially when it comes to …show more content…
So now that I’m in my third year of school everyone would expect more from you. That’s understandable and I was okay with that. The year started off pretty good, I did really well on all my essays and readings I thought I was going to soar by and excel everyone this year. Then she hit me with the “page type essays “. Just like my first English teacher, this one was the same kind, but she even put some ugly ass smiley and frowny faces on her notes. I tried using what I learned from the previous year and apply it into this, but it didn’t hold on very long. The rubrics got bigger and complicated it was really eating me alive. Imagine just writing bullshit just to get a grade, I literally just wrote shit every assignment and she wouldn’t even correct or give lessons about anything. She reads every word on the rubric and then gives us the “Good Luck You’ll Do GREAT!” and expects us to automatically get lucky and know how to do

“Spanglish” English such a complex language something spoken by many, and yet many others yearn to learn it. That was me a young and fragile girl who yearned to understand a foreign language, a language that other kids spoke. Edwin Land once said, “An essential aspect of creativity is not being afraid to fail.” In the two different writing, both authors come from very different backgrounds, but have similar messages. Amy Tan talks about not being afraid to do what you love, even if people tell you that you should major in something else. Anne Lamott discusses how you should not be afraid to write your first draft of a paper, it is suppose to be horrible. In her essay, “Mother Tongue”, Amy Tan discusses the hardships with her and her mother’s types of English, while in “Crummy First Drafts”, Anne Lamott talks about getting over your fears when writing the first draft of a paper; both of the authors essays vary in structure and tone, but have similar styles and purposes…

The transition from High School can often times be very frustrating for students. L. Lennie Irvin opened my eyes to one of the bad habits I picked up on in High school. The habit of straying from the topic or theme could cause me to fail not only papers in English but my other courses as well. I personally had a hard time with English my first semester of college. In High school I was always at the top of my class and my teachers would tell me how great of a writer I was.…

When I was in elementary and middle school I didn't really have a subject preference. I was just okay at every subject and I couldn't find myself interested in anything particular. I didn't feel lost because I had plenty of time to decide what I wanted for myself that would make me happy. After a certain point in my life though, I have always had a preference for English, a preference that I didn't act on until recently.…

As a young child at school, we had the Accelerated Reading Program. It was a program that encouraged children to read various books, and then after to take a quiz based on the books. This program really helped me, because the program pushed me to read more. Since I am bilingual, learning two languages as a child was a bit challenging for me, and learning how to read was even harder. I would sometimes mix up letters, vowels, and sometimes talk in Russian when I was supposed to talk in English.…

Mrs. Shewmaker my 11th grade English teacher mainly focused her teaching on multiple choice, which is the most challenging thing students had on the AP test. Taking a multiple choice every Monday seemed like a lot and it was because I would do good on some and not so good on others. The multiple choice would focus on grammar and overall questions that were based on the prompt. Every time we were given a new multiple choice worksheet I would get confused on what the question was asking. These multiple choice practice lowered my grade and made me feel like it was futile doing this because when it comes time to take the AP test the outcome of my score would reflect my grades.…

Like most children who grew up in a bilingual environment, I had trouble discerning Japanese and English when I was growing up in California, since I spent most of the time with my mother’s family. Because of that, any English I absorbed through PBS shows was mashed together with Japanese to form Japanglish. Then I briefly attended preschool in Naha, which made it even worse. I barely made it to elementary school. My kindergarten teacher recommended me to stay another year, but my parents refused to allow it.…

This year is my first year in high school. It’s a lot different than I expected. When I thought about high school, I thought about bullies, constant homework, cliques, and kids getting shoved in lockers, but I haven’t seen any of that so far. In lots of movies, there are horrible queen bees and musical lunchrooms. That’s a scary prospect, so it’s a good thing those are just for entertainment purposes.…

Development Scared, nervous, and unhappy would describe how I felt about taking a college English class. English was my most dreaded subject, and always has been simply because there is not always a right answer. Never the less I walked into my first day of English 101 dreading what was to come, however I left with an open mind.…

The one area over the years which I have the most problems in my English class is creative writing. For instance, our writing assignment for the Christmas holiday in the fourth grade was to create a famous person from an inanimate object and to give him a backstory. As I sat in my room pondering, I saw a sock. I immediately had an inspiration to create Socky Balboa, a famous boxer who was made of a sock. I based my story on the story of Rocky Balboa.…
