Gladiatorial Journal
3/21/37 - My first day at the gladiatorial school in Rome was unpleasant to say the least. I was a prisoner of war, and my name was Caiu. I was born in Sicily and was captured during the Sicilian Revolt. First, I was assessed by the Lanista, which was the owner of the gladiatorial school. They referred me as ‘novicius,’ which was what all the new recruits were called. After being assessed by the Lanista, I was checked by the doctor or Medici. They checked my physical abilities, such as strength and speed, and they ultimately found out that I was most suited to be a Retiarius, who used a net and trident as my main weapons. I barely had gotten any sleep and the guards had woken me up at the crack of dawn. Breakfast was the same as usual, which was some cereal and bread with water, and after that i started my training. My trainer told me I am extremely skilled with the trident and net, and he said that I could probably start my first training lesson with a real weapon by tomorrow. After I finished a couple of hours of training, I headed towards the building where I would take a bath and have a massage. After I finished these things I headed towards where I would have my lunch. Today's lunch consisted of some meat, fish, bread, and water. After lunch I headed back to the arena to continue my training. My trainer suprised me by presenting me with a real trident and net. He explained to me that he had seem how skill I was and wanted to quickly move on to the next stage of training. I trained tirelessly for the next few hours, and my trainer was extremely impressed in how well I was doing. After some time, I was allowed to go down to breakfast. I hastily ate some cereal and drank some water. As we were traveling to the gladiatorial games, I was thinking of who my possible opponents could be. My most likely opponents would be secutors. Secutors were heavily armed gladiators. When we arrived at the arena, my suspicions were proved to be true. I kept my distance because my trident had a longer range than his sword, which was called a gladius. I eventually found an opening and tossed my net and trapped him. I could not believe it! I won my first gladiatorial fight! After several hours, the gladiatorial games ended and I returned home feeling victorious. Maybe being a gladiator was not as bad as I thought it would be. Not only did it help me become a more skilled fighter, it also introduced me to new
