Gladiatorial Journal
3/21/37 - My first day at the gladiatorial school in Rome was unpleasant to say the least. I was a prisoner of war, and my name was Caiu. I was born in Sicily and was captured during the Sicilian Revolt. First, I was assessed by the Lanista, which was the owner of the gladiatorial school. They referred me as ‘novicius,’ which was what all the new recruits were called. After being assessed by the Lanista, I was checked by the doctor or Medici. They checked my physical abilities, such as strength and speed, and they ultimately found out that I was most suited to be a Retiarius, who used a net and trident as my main weapons. Being a Retiarius meant that I relied on speed to win the gladiatorial games. I had to wait

I barely had gotten any sleep and the guards had woken me up at the crack of dawn. Breakfast was the same as usual, which was some cereal and bread with water, and after that i started my training. My trainer told me I am extremely skilled with the trident and net, and he said that I could probably start my first training lesson with a real weapon by tomorrow. After I finished a couple of hours of training, I headed towards the building where I would take a bath and have a massage. After I finished these things I headed towards where I would have my lunch. Today's lunch consisted of some meat, fish, bread, and water. After lunch I headed back to the arena to continue my training. My trainer suprised me by presenting me with a real trident and net. He explained to me that he had seem how skill I was and wanted to quickly move on to the next stage of training. I trained tirelessly for the next few hours, and my trainer was extremely impressed in how well I was doing. After having dinner, I was escorted back to my cell and tried to get some …show more content…
After some time, I was allowed to go down to breakfast. I hastily ate some cereal and drank some water. As we were traveling to the gladiatorial games, I was thinking of who my possible opponents could be. My most likely opponents would be secutors. Secutors were heavily armed gladiators. When we arrived at the arena, my suspicions were proved to be true. I kept my distance because my trident had a longer range than his sword, which was called a gladius. I eventually found an opening and tossed my net and trapped him. I could not believe it! I won my first gladiatorial fight! After several hours, the gladiatorial games ended and I returned home feeling victorious. Maybe being a gladiator was not as bad as I thought it would be. Not only did it help me become a more skilled fighter, it also introduced me to new

Teamwork is dangerous, or at least it is in Stanley Kubrick’s Spartacus. Spartacus takes us to first century rome, where a former slave has started an uprising after killing one of the trainers watching and keeping guard over the soon to be gladiators. Spartacus is an interesting movie, because it shows how bravery and relentlessness can spark hope and community within strangers and acquaintances. The makeup department for Spartacus was, in comparison to other movies set in older time periods (such as Exodus: Gods and Kings) really well done.…

“Picture it! Sparta, 490 B.C. Sparta, a powerful city-state in ancient Greece, is known for learning one thing, war. Different from its neighboring city-state, Athens, boys were taken away from their mothers at the age of seven and were taught the art of war, instead of mathematics, Philosophy, and other subjects. The Spartans are also known for defeating thousands of enemy soldiers with only 300 Spartan men at the battle of Thermopylae (even though they all died.) Those are the things I do know.…

Crixus presses the subject and asks if he would try to kill him. Spartacus says yes, he goes on to say “I’d try to stay alive and so would you.” This brilliantly adds a justification to the violence gladiators were forced to inflict on one another. Another gladiator film that romanticizes violence is Gladiator. In this film, Maximus, a respected Roman general, becomes a slave after fleeing from Commodus rule.…

Although the gladiators are all different they all take the sacramentum gladiatorium which states “uri, vinciri, verberari, ferroque necari.” All gladiators attend to a special school, located near the Coliseum, where they are trained hard for lengthy amounts of time. These gladiators are usually slaves, criminals, or prisoners of war, sometimes they are fighting for their freedom or serving a death sentence. Occasionally people, including women (isn’t that so cool, maybe we should try it), actually volunteer to be gladiators because of the benefits, including food, money, and fame. Every once in awhile they have animals such as bears, rhinos, tigers, elephants, and giraffes…

The fall of the Roman Republic nearly saw the destruction of Roman civilization. From the ashes of constant infighting between powerful generals and senators, Octavian—the adopted son of Julius Caesar—rose to unquestionable power. This marked the beginning of the Roman Empire.
