Personal Reflective Essay: My Work Experience After High School

Life was different growing up in South Africa, with divorced parents (from the age of 5) and my mother being the sole provider in a low-income family. Until the age of eighteen, my objective was to finish high school and to start working, because at the age of sixteen I was almost self-sufficient. The public school, which I had access to, in the late 1990’s did not offer any activities or organization involvement. My first contact with student life was when I became a student at Lone Star College-Montgomery in Texas.
My work experience proved a bit different and more rewarding results than my school experience. Working as a full time general office assistant in May 1999 for a household claim assessors company, named Hida Loss Adjusters. I developed strong computer literacy skills and a skill to simplify procedures. By implementing a standard template for assessor reports, we were able to to handle and process

I adapted to college well, I had many questions, maybe too shy to ask, but I did what I could and had to do to make it successful as it could be. One day I got an email from the international advisor regarding on-campus employment as a “Maverick Leader” and applied. I got the job and started working in November 2012, and my entire college experience changed. I also learned about Phi Theta Kappa and their benefits and became a member in April 2013.
The Maverick Leader program, which is similar to being an Ambassador on campus, provided me with the knowledge about what college has to offer; career exploring, tutoring, campus life, involvement, clubs/organizations & sports. This position proved that college life is be more fun and offers more opportunities to be successful. I was also the star of the month, twice. The position was a part-time position, working a maximum of 19.5 hours of hours per

As you requested, I am writing to share my past writing experiences which include what kinds of writing I have done in school, the feedback that I seek on my work before I turn in assignments, the memories that I have of writing, voluntary writing I have done, and much more. Past Experiences with Writing Previous to this course I have taken several mandatory English, Writing, and Literature courses in which I have gained experience that now impact the way I write. In reality, it was a difficult journey as I gained employment and the transition was not easy as my grades reflect that in the fall of 2013. However, I quickly learned time management and how to prioritize which allowed me to become more involved on campus. For some of my peers, college was expected of them as their parents had gone to a University and graduated. But for me, it was different, as my parents did not have the opportunity to finish high school because the need to put food on the table was a higher…

Entering college as a student with little to no guidance of what to expect, made my transition remotely difficult. My mother completed two years of college, and my brother failed his first semester and dropped out of college, which made me curious as to what challenges I would face in this new environment. My first year I received a C and C+ in History and Pre-calculus respectfully. I was naive in the truth that I should have used office hours to solidify my understanding in these classes. My sophomore year I made another decision that would impact my academic standing by joining a Fraternity regardless of my lack of understanding of Greek life.…

Three years into my high school I hadn't gotten into the state of mind that most over achievers have. I had floated through high school thinking I was trying my very hardest to get good grades and become a consistently studious candidate of my school. However, no matter how hard I tried I failed I gave into all the distractions and used all my obstacles as excuses became frustrated and developed an attitude problem that I had created myself. Being a consistent 2.5 student wasn't satisfying or inspiring. Uniquely enough, I had decided to take challenging courses my junior year.…

My personal experience and take away from English 111 was what I expected it would be before I started the course. No, there was no “life changing” moment for me from this course and I honestly I can’t say I am a better or worse citizen for taking this class, but I can say my writing skills have improved, and that I feel more confident in my writing than prior to taking this course. Writing has and continues to be a challenge for me, I have no illusion that I will ever be a “perfect” or even a “good” writer for that matter, but because some of things I learned in how to prepare and to write an essay I feel I’m a much improved writer. Specifically the topics covered from the first module of this course help my development.…
