Personal Narrative: My English Composition Class

In the beginning of my first college course semester, I had no idea what my professor meant when she referred to brainstorming. I did however research what brainstorming consisted of. I feel as if I have grown a great deal in my abilities to get my ideas from my thoughts on to actual paper. I honestly have never been challenged as much as I have in the English composition class. In my first essay about world events, I completely drew a blank as to what I should write about. I could not even think about where to begin relaying my thoughts. I finally sat down with my notebook and pencil and starting writing events that made worldwide news in the past few years. I did not fully understand that beginning a paper did not mean that I had to complete it in one sitting, one attempt, and one try. I began to …show more content…
My three subjects chosen were NFL players that were not kneeling for the Pledge of Allegiance, the 9/11 terrorist attack, and the tornado outbreak of 2011. As I began to brainstorm, I realized these three topics were close to my heart. In baseball and football, I always participated in the Pledge of Allegiance before each game. To me, this shows respect not only to the flag, but also to the men and women that gave me the freedom to play the sports that I love. During this essay, I struggled a great deal trying to list enough things to write about. (“Influences Through Major World Events” 1) As I began to start my next essay, I had to choose an essay about volunteering. This brainstorming turned out to be harder than my previous essay. I am only seventeen years old. Therefore, I have not really had any experience in volunteering. My days are usually spent at school, baseball or football practice, and at my part time

When I was in elementary and middle school I didn't really have a subject preference. I was just okay at every subject and I couldn't find myself interested in anything particular. I didn't feel lost because I had plenty of time to decide what I wanted for myself that would make me happy. After a certain point in my life though, I have always had a preference for English, a preference that I didn't act on until recently.…

There are good writers and there are good writers who work hard to become better. Mrs. Fiske, my English teacher junior and senior year of high school always told me that I was one of the best writers in my class but I could always be better. Spelling has always been one of my strong suits and I always get bothered when people can’t spell simple words. I’m pretty good at writing essays but I do not enjoy writing them at all.…

My talent is creating, and my form of creating is writing. Writing is a thing I've been doing since I was in the seventh grade. I started writing then because of a troublesome past, both my mother and my father had left my two other siblings and I all alone, leaving us with our uncle. It was very hard for me to adjust, I was fatigued and emotionally hurt, I turned to writing. My love for writing grew into a bigger part of my life when I kept dream journals.…

My writing experience in and out of school has almost always been seen exactly the same. It’s work, you do it for the grade and for some you suffer the entire time. On the occasional paper, usually one with no restrictions and you choose your subject, I find myself in a love and hate relationship with it. The fact being that writing papers has almost always been seen as homework for me. Have your paper done by this day, it needs to be this many words, and no grammatical errors just isn’t something I’d find myself getting hyped for every saturday night.…

I learned that all the prewriting is not the same there are different formats of writing. I haven't learned which essay writing best fits me. I believe that the one that fits me the most is the free writing because I can just write down anything and continue without stopping. I can write to whatever comes to mind and even though it doesn't make any sense I still write it down I feel that most of my best writing comes from free style writing. I can only do my best when I feel that I am able to more work under pressure and that I can relieve a lot of my stress by writing.…

As I've gotten older in middle school I can see how much iv changed over the years and how my work has gotten better. At the beginning of the year, I didn't understand the writing techniques. I've always struggled with my writing and organizer and always been behind, but now I understand my topics and what I'm supposed to be writing. One of my greatest strengths is being able to create a story out of anything, I also took it in my hands to make sure all my questions are answered to understand what I'm writing about. Yet, there are also parts I need to improve my grammar and word choice.…

Writing has never been one of my strongest skills nor my favorite. Even though I enjoy reading another person’s writing the thought of someone else reading mine just sends chills down my spine. I wouldn’t consider myself a decent writer whatsoever. This defiantly gets in the way of how I feel about writing at times, because it makes me insecure of what others are going to think after they finish reading my essay. When I signed up for ENGL 1301 I was quick to assume the course was just going to consist of reading a lot of material and taking quizzes that covered the readings.…

I remember when I was 5, the first time I went to a building daily for 8 hours. I sat down on the cold blue chair. In front of me was a bin of crayons, all the colors of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and purple. I remember sitting in the cold room and having the freedom to draw marks on my blank sheet of paper. The dye scratching against the table, colors spreading across the canvas like the sun, rising in the early morning.…

Looking at my past experiences I couldn’t begin to understand how I could write an entire paper on what I’ve done. I soon realized as I dug deeper into the assignment that what I thought were meaningless events, ended up being major components of my life that helped shape me as an individual. One experience that was formative to me as a child was when my grandmother moved in with my family. She taught me the value of education and just how big of an impact it had on my own life as I grew up. She firmly believed that reading and writing specifically correlated to the success of any student.…

Walking out of the classroom on the first day of school after College Prep Writing I knew that the class would be difficult and teach me a lot about my writing. I could have never guessed how much this one, semester long, class would truly affect my writing skills. Looking back at my older writing pieces, that I had once felt confident about, now have mistakes jumping out at me. The levels of writing we were taught and got to try out were things I had never done to my full extent before. I know when college comes I will be very grateful for this class.…

What vivid moments do you experience when reading, writing, or activities that involved them? Or what frustrated you about reading and writing? My experience with reading and writing start with my teacher from elementary all the way up to my teachers in high School, Ripley, Tennessee school district, and University of Memphis.
