If you could fill up a swimming pool with anything what would it be? Would you rather be a princess or a superhero? What was your favorite part of the week? Those were the questions I asked when leading my first cabin chat. Cabin chat includes asking silly questions or a time to talk about experiences of life with a chronic illness. Cabin chat was always one of my favorite parts of camp because we could speak without fear of judgment or not understanding, even at the age of 7.
This past summer was my first year not being an official camper, I was a Leadership Camper. On the last night of camp the youngest girls cabin had a shortage of counselors; as Leadership Campers, we were asked if one of us would step up and lead their cabin chat. We all stood there in silence, the memory of my first cabin chat and the impact each one after that came quickly flashing back. This was beginning to happen more and more often until my grades weren’t so cheerful. I was never a straight A student but things were getting a bit out of hand. In 6th grade I had a project assigned, it was titled who do you want to be? I realized at the rate I was going I wasn’t going to get very far, instead of using my illness as an excuse I let that be my reason to persevere. At this point in my life, I knew I wanted a career related to medicine. I also discovered medicine was a tough subject so I began studying harder and took more interest in what Ulcerative Colitis actually was, along with other similar conditions.
