My First Battle Of Guillemons

Decent Essays
I have seen the end to three battles and am currently in my forth. I have lost friends in all of them. My first battle was the Battle of Guillemont. Guillemont was under German rule through late July and August, even with repeated British attacks. I did not join the battle until September third due to rain. I was a part of the 5th Division, which unfortunately, did not fare as well as the 20th Division or the 16th. The 20th consisted of two battalions which took the Germans by surprise and established the main assault. The 16th fought hard and secured Guillemont and furthered our control eastward.

Back in World War 2, there were a lot of wars: the battle of Britain, which took a good amount of the troops, the battle of Atlantic, which took most of the battle ships. But the worst battle was the Dieppe raid. That battle was both a success and a failure. It all depends on the way the troops where, if they learnt their lessons and if they are planning to ever do that again.…

I learned a lot that day about the skills that we have been trained to utilize. It had become muscle memory, I reacted first instead of thinking, I put others around me before my own needs and most important I did my job. It truly showed me how strong an infantryman is mentally and physically. Anyone can say they want to be Infantry; however, it is a completely different thing to actually put boots on and do what we…

Prior to the Battle of Vimy Ridge, WWI was beginning to seem endless. Casualties began to build up to drastic numbers, forces were weakening, trenches were in horrible condition, and valuable resources needed for the war were depleting. A few number of battles during the First World War were somewhat successful, while most were considered a ground of large-scale chaos and butchery, which often resulted in a stalemate. One successful battle amongst the many that took place during World War I was the Battle of Vimy Ridge. Not only was it representing the ending stage of the First World War, but will forever hold a significant place in Canadian history and its citizens.…

In the summer of 1917, British forces launched a strategic offensive campaign near the town of Ypres, Belgium, against the German Army resulting in approximately 200,000 dead German Soldiers, and nearly 300,000 dead British Soldiers. The British aimed to relieve the worn-out French forces already in place, and then take possession of the areas above the plain of Flanders, mainly the city of Passchendaele and its surrounding areas. The result was a sound beating of the British forces by the German forces, with the British having to be bailed out by other Allied Forces, largely French and Canadian, in order to even come close to achieving the original objective. This was the third battle of Ypres, officially known as the Battle of Passchendaele…

Thanks for the box of socks and supplies, I really appreciate them and it is much needed when in the trenches here. Conscripts are my enemy as well as the Germans, I don't believe in this way of war where I was working one day in my town and now fighting in a completely different country with blood all over my face. I wish now i wasn't young for then i would be home and not in these trenches where Heavies blow up everyone i get close too. Last night I thought it was going to be the end of me when I went on a trench raid with 6 other fellow soldiers I know, it was a heavy and risky task to do knowing any minute flare lights would bring us into enemy sights in no-man's land and our grenades and wire cutters would be useless against the artillery…
