Personal Narrative: My First Act Of Kindness

Improved Essays
One morning as I was getting ready for school, something on the radio caught my attention. People were calling in and sharing stories about how someone had committed an act of kindness. This got me thinking about how I could do similar things. I came up with three different and personal ideas to bless someone during the Thanksgiving season. For my first act of kindness I wanted to do something that was very close and personal to me. My dad has a lady, named Norma, come and clean his business. She has been really struggling ever since her husband went to prison a few years ago. My dad and his staff try to help her out when they can. I wanted to do something special for the holidays. I went to Meijer to buy Norma some groceries. I bought her some frozen food, potatoes, canned fruit, pasta, and soup. She finds flavored coffee creamer a luxury, so I bought her a large bottle of hazelnut and a large bottle of peppermint mocha coffee creamer. I put a card inside one the bags that read, “Kindness has a beautiful way of reaching down into a weary heart and making it shine like the rising sun. You have been given a random act of kindness, please pass one on to …show more content…
To me this means being more cautious about how I spend my money. Giving made me happy and caused me to look at the rest of my week with a positive attitude. If someone would have asked me before I performed these three acts of kindness what I was thankful for I would have answered with the basic family, friends, and school. Each person I bought something for really made me think about what I was truly thankful for. Norma helped me realize that I am grateful to have a meal on the table every night. Grandpa at Applebee’s showed me what it meant to have people that care about my well being. The elderly woman at Family Fare simply made me realize that I was thankful for the ability to

I use to work with a girl who was homeless and she was living out of her friends closet just to have somewhere to sleep at night. She didn’t know how long she would get to stay there so I bought her a sleeping bag, a blanket, and a pillow incase she had to sleep outside again or just in case she didn’t have anything to sleep with at night. She was so happy to receive the gifts from me and seeing her appreciation made me realize, what seems like a little gift to you is a huge need for someone…

For our civic engagement project for the Redefining Leadership class, my group, Stephanie, Hailee, Christina, and I, decided to volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House in New Haven, Connecticut on a Thursday. Before we got there, we did not know what to expect, but afterwards, we truly felt grateful that we helped out a great cause. The Ronald McDonald House is a charity house that keeps families close to their family members that are being treated at a nearby hospital. We spoke with someone who works at the House and she told us that eight families were there on that day. We were able to see some people and did what we could to help out.…

Every year on Thanksgiving break I have gone to my grandparents house to stay for the week. For me this is important because my grandparents live a good ways away and I barely get to see them. This became a tradition when I moved away from where they live because that's when our other traditions ended like on wednesdays we used to meet somewhere and eat dinner but we can’t do that any more so we thought that Thanksgiving break is a good time to go see them because we have off school and they can get off work. The whole time we are up there we laugh cook and have fun together.…

Volunteering at the homeless shelter is one of my favorite things to do. A few weeks ago, on a serene Saturday morning, my family and I volunteered at Loaves and Fishes. It was special to see just the sheer amount of people who had come out to volunteer on that Saturday. If you think about, they could’ve been doing anything on that Saturday morning. Yet, they decided to help give back to their community.…
