My Final Reflection

As I enter my final semester at the University of Maryland, I realize I have put off English until I had no other choice but to take it. I was never the best writer. Others can write papers in a few hours and not have to plan a few days like I must. However, I came into this class with an open mind. While reviewing the syllabus, I believe I will do best on the discussion posts. Discussion post in general are meant to be a bit informal. Therefore, for me personally, knowing this piece of information allows me to freely write. Furthermore, I feel more at ease and less stressed while writing discussion posts. Additionally, the discussion posts so far have been interesting and thought provoking, making them enjoyable to complete. Another assignment I believe to do well on are these journal reflections. In previous classes, I was also assigned journal reflections to complete throughout the semester. These reflections were insightful to track my improvements.
Assignments that will be more difficult for me is essentially everything else. As I stated earlier, I struggle with English courses. I second guess every word I write. This makes doing papers much more difficult than they should be. However, the most difficult assignment may be the 20-page paper since there is not a specific topic given. When I took freshman English, I recognized a change within myself. The professor I had, Professor Schumaker, made me not hate English. I learned a lot of helpful information from him. So much so, I took him again sophomore year for my second English course. In addition, I am a Public Health Science major. This major requires us to write many papers throughout the semester. Most, if not all, are research papers in about five pages in length. These papers were specific and more academic than what this class appears to

The Assignment that has had the Most Impact on me so Far In my first semester of going back to college, after having been out for over ten years, I took Business English, taught by, May Daniel. This class was a long-distance learning class and started at 4:30 and ended at 5:50 p.m. Mrs. Daniel, told us about our assignments on the first day and one of them was a portfolio project that would be due on the last days of the semester. This assignment included making a resume, a cover letter, a recommendation letter, a cover sheet and a report giving details about the career we are hoping to achieve after graduations and then we had to make it into a PowerPoint presentation to present to the class.…

Throughout this semester, we have written two major papers that really display my capabilities as a writer. By evaluating these two pieces with the learning outcomes established at the beginning of this semester, outcomes 1, 2, and 3 are most applicable when gauging my progress in this course. Learning outcome 1 is, "Demonstrate academic research and writing skills in essays and projects to participate in a scholarly conversation" Learning outcome 2 is, "Demonstrate critical reading through a knowledge of the forms and functions of a variety of texts" Learning Outcome 3 is, "Follow a research writing process that includes developing a topic, locating and evaluating sources (including peer-reviewed), composing in response to those sources, and revising and reflecting on that process;" Each of these outcomes I believe I have met by using them as goals when writing in and out of class. In my essay "Survivors and their Children: Examining the Holocaust's Multigenerational Effects" I discuss the impact the Holocaust has on those who survived it and on their children.…

The transition from High School can often times be very frustrating for students. L. Lennie Irvin opened my eyes to one of the bad habits I picked up on in High school. Everyone hates English class is what I thought before taking English 102. However, that may have been the case before I entered Dr. Byrd’s domain, but after finishing the class I have come to the realization that English class can be greatly resourceful. English 102 this year has had its ups and downs, and I must admit the ups outweigh the downs. Meaning, this year, I have learned that I am not a student who wants to read or write, but through reading and writing my mind and skill sets concerning English have grown. During English 102 this year, reading and writing in class helped me expand my writing skills, improved my will to comprehend, and most importantly helped expand my knowledge.…

When I began studying at the University of Montevallo, I had a background of high school creative writing and English classes, and one summer of a college English class. To be honest, I was terrified of jumping into my fall English 102 class. I felt I was unprepared for a serious college level composition class, and that I would have a strenuous time adjusting to a four-year university. However, as I walk away from my English 102 class I carry the understanding of writing a college level essay, undertaking research and completing a research and argument paper properly, and knowledge to prepare me for my other classes and profession.…

English Composition I taught me a lot about myself, including how to be a better college student, through the process of writing. At the beginning of the year, I was not very excited about having to write argumentative papers. This is because I did not care enough about the assigned topics to have an opinion. But, I did learn a lot that I would not have known otherwise from having to research information about the topics I chose to write about. For example, in paper #2, I wrote about the niqab and how I believe that it is oppressive to women.…

After seven weeks of study in English 150, I learned a lot about academic writing, oral presentation, visual concepts and electronic technologies. According to ISUComm student guide: “Writing is a complex attempt to communicate with another human being remotely, sometimes across centuries. We even use writing to communicate with ourselves---to sort out our thoughts or figure out who we are”(ISUComm). Since we are communicating with others or even ourselves, we should pay attention to the rhetorical situation, which means we need to know who our audiences are, what our issues and purposes are and the context.…

This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay. It’s been a heavy work load especially this semester since I decided to enroll in five classes, but in the end it has been very beneficial indeed. I can’t say that writing essays has been one of my strong points but I believe that this course has helped me improve tremendously and it has also made me feel a lot more comfortable with my writing. While in high school I would usually write all of my essays a day before the due date a habit of mine that was very difficult to overcome, but now I have learned from my mistakes.…
