These were my final hours spent within the nursery. I feel the experience overall has been a very rewarding one as I have learned so many new things and grew more as person because of it. During this block there were rats that got into the nursery, it was interesting to see the measures and precautions that were put into place in this situation as it was something I’d never expect to have happened. During this event each child displayed different emotions and reacted to it differently. From this, it was made clear to me the importance of empathising with the children. I was able to listen to their feeling and understand why they were feeling that way. Some of them were scared, so I was able to help calm them down by making them feel safe and protected. I tried to explain to the children that the rats were as scared as they were and didn’t want to hurt them. The children I have been working with have a great sense of humour, are very creative and they really embrace their individuality. They often have a unique perspective of the world which is very different from the way adults view it.
I do believe it is important for me to try and expand my creative mind when working with kids as it is nowhere near as imitative as theirs. These children have taught me a lot of things that I didn’t know about myself. They have helped me see the areas I am strong at and the thing I need to work on more. By working in the nursery I have also realised how rewarding working with children can be and I now know that additional support needs is an area that I would like more explore more.
