Reflection On Fieldwork

Introduction My fieldwork assignment was at Folger Mckinsey Elementary School in Severna Park, Maryland. The advisor, Mr.Wajitia placed me in a second grade classroom with my cooperating teacher, Mrs. Meredith. The main subject she teaches is language arts. She starts off the day with a drill pertaining to the number of days the kids have been in school so far. Next they have carpet time where they discuss their activities for the day. After that they go into their small groups. Then at 12:30 pm she switches students with her neighboring teacher. Her second class is an advanced class in language arts compared to her regular morning class. After that Mrs. Meredith and the neighboring teacher switch back students. As the day goes on Mrs. Meredith has numerous tasks for me to do. She asks me to make copies, file papers in children’s take home folders, and help the kids with any questions they have while Mrs. Meredith is in her small groups. The students are very eager to learn, overall she has a very positive classroom environment.

Meredith also incorporated technology very frequently in her lessons. She had students make mind maps on chrome books as well as type up story they wrote. When she would have one small group and the rest of the class would be working on other work she had spelling activities to be done on different learning apps on an iPad. I think this helps with keeping the children attentive in the classroom. This school is very technology savvy in their classrooms.
My fieldwork experience has made me understand that having numerous teaching strategies like Mrs. Meredith is very beneficial to the students. If one student does not grasp a concept when you are explaining it then you as a teacher can try showing it to them. Another way she lets the children learn is playing games and using student–student problem solving. As a teacher you just have to keep trying to help kids understand topics in their own learning style so they can
