My Field Experience Analysis

This week during my field experience, I got the amazing opportunity to go to Fort Yates and visit the shelter down there. I went down there with an advocate who has her license in social work. That was an amazing opportunity because I learned a lot from being able to talk to her about social work. I found it interesting that when discussing what we learned during college, that there was overlap despite going to different colleges. In addressing the activities, I was very excited to get the chance to travel to Fort Yates. I have never been there, however, I learned several new things, thanks to the advocate who was very knowledgeable and answered a great deal of my questions. I was a little nervous this week because for the first time I answered the phone and talked to a client. I was nervous because …show more content…
I learned new things about the Native Americans and about the Sioux reservation. Before Wednesday I did not know what the Bureau of Indian Affairs. I learned that they have two officers working at a time for the whole reservation. I also learned about a policy that I found very upsetting and think should be changed. In the reservation they do not share information with the state and other reservations. So someone could have three offenses for driving under the influence on the Sioux reservation and if they moved to Bismarck or another reservation, no one would know because of lack of information sharing. It was also a very emotional experience to go down there. In all honesty, it was a very sad place. Several of the buildings were boarded up, trash everywhere, stray dogs running around, and abandoned cars everywhere. It was like we entered a whole different country. The advocate told me about how there are no jobs on the reservation. She showed me a couple of businesses that had opened, but then closed. The Taco John's had closed because they could not meet health codes and the employees were dealing drugs during

Most of the “incompetent” Indians had mines in their property and had a quarter of Indian blood or more; I do not consider this to be merely a coincidence because those who were declared the opposite did not own any mine properties. These properties held by the “incompetent” Indians were managed by the Secretary of Interior. Even though, some members of The Quapaw Tribe sued for their rights, unfortunately the Supreme Court did not rule in their favor. Apparently, their justification was the Department of Interior acted in the best interest for the Indians, but everyone has always questioned their…

This week in field was not too busy, but was busy enough to allow me to experience and complete new tasks. Although the tasks completed this week were not very challenging, they allowed me to come in contact with some of the competency skills. Competency skill 9 was re-introduced from last week. I was to report to the Arthurtown site and intern under the supervision of Ms. Julia. Ms. Julia had me continue to sort through employee files; looking for forms any of the teachers may have been missing or needed to update.…

I can resonate with your mix feelings. While I do have a lot of experience in serving clients in beauty needs, I do feel a bit less confident in the mental health field. Although, I think because I am still a student so try to explain to myself that experience will increase competence. As a beginner counselor, yes, we do have room to grow; in fact, I am looking forward to that. So hang in there, and you will do great..…

The real eye opening experience for me was the during this summer when I participated in an anthropology study of three Brooklyn neighborhoods. Imagine this I never thought was going to need to speak to large groups people, now I am required to go talk to strangers in neighborhoods I never been to. This was the equivalent of throwing me into the deep end of the pool and watching if I sink or float. The first day of fieldwork, I get off the G train and step out into the street of Greenpoint, Brooklyn. The sun shined brightly flashing a beam of light right into my eyes, as my eyes began to focus I soon realized that I was out in a different world.…

Throughout my practicum experience I had the privilege to observe, participate, and lead many aspects of the mental health processes. I was able to get a better understanding of the processes behind group therapy, case management, assessments, intakes, as well as preventative classes. It all honestly I valued my experiences here more than some of the classes I have taken; because it allowed me to bridge the gap between the classroom and what is really encompassed within the mental health profession. The experience I had at Northern Wyoming Mental Health is one that I am truly grateful to have been a part of and I have them and Sheridan College to thank for that. All in all I attended more than 60 hours of IOP, sat in on an 8 hour DUI class, observed intake assessments, helped with the case management process, and gathered valued feedback from both my supervisors and fellow coworkers.…

The first child I choose was Jonah, who has the severe hearing impairment. The modifications that I would have to make in my environment would maybe to have words hanging around the room so I can point at them with him so he can understand me. The adaptations that I would have to make would be to learn sign language so that he can better understand me since he cannot hear. I would also to speak while I am doing the sign language so that the other students can understand me at the same time. In my Experience Plan, my first experience was the boot camp outside in a small area.…

John Dewey said “ we do not learn from experience… we learn from reflection on experience”. By using John Dewey as my motto, I always reflect on my days, and my life, hoping that my life experience will teach me something in order for me to become a better person. By reflecting on my experience I learn a lot from it, especially from this class. The reason I am studying global studies is because I wanted to learn more about the world issue, learn more about other culture and gain more understanding and knowledge of the world culture. For me Global Studies is a very fascinating subject, because it’s not only teaches me about culture differences in the world, but it also teaches me about history, politic and as well as the economics in different countries.…
