Guidance Growing up with the Latino culture, my mother would tell me stories so that I would behave. The first story that comes to mind is of “El Cucuy” a creature that would kidnap kids who misbehaved. Just how my mother used stories to keep me and my siblings in line, the author 's parents/guardians from “Silk Parachute”, “Grandmother 's Victory” by Maya Angelou, “Salvation” by Langston Hughes, and “Remembrance of a Puerto Rican Childhood” by Judith Ortiz Cofer had their own methods to raise them. I believe that all four essays reinforce, relate, and overlap each other because the outcome of each story is to show how a parent/guardian has an impact on a child’s life by showing them life lessons. “Silk Parachute”, “Grandmother 's Victory”,…

Imagery is dominant in this poem, especially after Maya questions her oppressors. Most of the imagery is conveyed through similes and metaphors, and gives the readers a clear view on what Maya is trying to get across. The use of figurative language gives the readers a clear picture of what Maya means and usually conveys a strong emotion. When Maya says “Shoulders falling down like teardrops” we can get an image of drooping shoulders (like the shape of a tear) and the tear itself is associated with sadness. I found one particular stanza quite amusing; Maya asks questions that are aimed at the ‘white’ people.…

For example in the first two lines of the poem the writer says "Remember the sky that you were born under, know each of the star's stories"(Harjo 1-2). To me it sounds like the writer wants us to remember how we were all born under the same sky and that each of us has seen the stars above us.…
