Prologue
William Traylor is ran over by a motorcyclist on a rainy day and becomes quadriplegic. This drastically changes his active and adventurous lifestyle.

Louisa Clark looses her job of 7 years at the Buttered Bun due to completing business. Her family relies on her income, so she must now find a new job.

Mrs. Traynor interviews Louisa to take care of her quadriplegic son, Will. Although there are more qualified candidates, Lou gets the job in hopes of raising Will's spirit. The Traynors are wealthy and respected in their community and want the best help for their son.

Lou starts her first day of work. Will is unfriendly at her bubbly and chipper attitude and makes Lou doubt whether the job is right for her.

Nathan takes care of Will's high blood pressure and tubes since Will insisted Lou not do it the night before. Lou and Will ask Nathan if he will accompany them on their getaway. Nathan suspects a romantic relationship is beginning to form between the two.

Lou finds the perfect destination in California for the trip that is wheelchair friendly and that has many quadriplegic activities. Mrs. Traynor approves the plans. Patrick is jealous of the time Lou spends with Will. He is angry she is going on a trip with Will and not coming to watch him run a marathon. Patrick and Louisa break up. Lou stays with Will for the weekend since her sister is home with her son and the house is too small to fit Lou, Trina, Thomas, her parents and her granddad. Lou starts to realize that she might have feelings for Will.

This chapter is in the point of view of Steven, Will's father. Lou presents the getaway's itinerary to Will's family. Lou must convince Will that the trip is her benefit, otherwise, Will will not agree to the trip. Steven believes that he will not be free to be with the woman he loves unless Will is dead and he no longer has an obligation to his family. Will gets sick with
