In terms of emotional intelligence, I believe my father’s number one strength is Motivation. My father knows what is like to face the unknown. He relied heavily on this emotional intelligence when he decided to come to the United States not knowing how he would make it, but knowing he would make it. In one of our conversations reflecting on this journey, he tells me how he came close to death due to a lack of water. However, as determined and optimistic my father is, he was able to drive on a little further, eventually acquiring a water source. At the end of the day, my father relied heavily on his strong desire to achieve, optimism even in doubt, and his commitment he made to his family. Out of a dozen of travelers, only a group of two—including my father, made it. That conversation is my go-to when I need inspiration and a purpose to accomplish a goal of mine. Taking those measures into account, my father’s second strength of emotional intelligence is Self-awareness. When I visit my father at work, I see how confident and well-organized he is in his duties. He is the one who is lifting the spirits of his co-workers by laughing and making jokes. He is in charge of a group of men at work and truly understands the people he works with. I can recall an employee getting in trouble for cooking an order wrong. Instead of being bitter of the mistake, my father assisted the man in completing the order, providing him guidance and support. My father also demonstrates a strong sense of Empathy. My sister and I benefit immensely because although we were not raised by our father, he still shows us unyielding support for our goals and ambitions.
