Since my mom has been a single mother, she controls her household and everyone listens to her. When my dad comes in town, every winter and summer break we also listen to him too. Phi Lam, my father, is a fifty year old Vietnamese refugee from Vietnam who fled his war-torn country in search for a place of safety and opportunity. In order to learn more about my own culture and how exactly I came to be an Asian-American, I have chosen my father to be my interviewee. It all started in 1975, when the Viet Cong won the Vietnam War. With my father’s family supporting the South, despite the North’s victory, he was forced into a rough life. His family was split; the men in the family was sent to (what they sugarcoated) “re-education camps”, while the women and children were sent away to an isolated area in the humid jungles of Vietnam called the “economic zone.”…

Interestingly, this process has been around since the beginning of man and is an essential part of being human. When I was a child, my family would have been considered a traditional family – my father worked, my mother stayed home with my older brother and me, we lived in a house and could pay our bills. The social hierarchy of my family was very complex – my mother usually had a say in everything and during the day I thought of her as the head of the household. However, when my father came home he was the head of the household. Around my 13th birthday, though, my family hierarch changed because my parents got divorced.…

However, after immigrating from Mexico to the United States to live with my father, the family dynamic changed drastically. It went from an open communication environment where my siblings and I could express freely, to living in a strict household where our feelings were not validated. My father expressed his power by establishing rules that were not imposed upon us prior to living with him. Even though my mother did not agree with the strict rules he established, he went ahead and did it anyway. For example, my sister and I were not allowed to hang out with friends of the opposite sex, when before my mother allowed that.…

Society dictates one of the fundamental rules of a parental unit, is to teach their offspring expectations and responsibilities to be a viable contribution to society. Therefore, growing up as a military youth my father took this to an extreme. Everything about our life had rules and with those rules came responsibility. The United States government made rules for my father, my father made rules for my mother, (which she frequently broke) and consequently my father made rules for my brothers and I. I know what you’re thinking; every family has rules and responsibilities that they are supposed to do in an allotted time.…
