My Family: Brian Galfo As A Father

Improved Essays
Each day we are alive we happen to drive our parents’ crazy by getting into trouble, fighting with our siblings, or not listening to our parents. At my house there was one thing my siblings and I respected it was dad, the man who wore many hats in our family. The one thing we knew as kids, that nothing was going to get anything by him, he tended to find out everything. Was it that my siblings and I were scared of the six foot four, two hundred fifty pound, Italian man or was it the facts his hands were like cinderblocks? It was the fact we respected his values and the method to his madness he called being a father. His work ethic, patience, and family traditions make Brian Galfo an astonishing father. First, his work ethic is something unknown …show more content…
Since my dad was the only one of his sibling to stay near where he grew up, so he could take care of his mom, everyone knew Uncle Brian will help. My dad loved his nephews Mike and Tom, like they were his own; after his sister Deb when through a bad divorce and left them with their father. My dad would never say no if Mike or Tom need anything especially if it meant them moving into our small three bedrooms and one bath house. Coming from an Italian family my dad was big on family traditions, he believed that was the strength to all family bonds. Growing up is was a routine to attend church and spend time at grandma’s house on Sunday. Family vacations were either spent at our family beach on Long Beach Island or at the cabin in the Poconos, close enough for my dad to get home if work called. We cannot forget the pumpkin picking with the Oakleys or going the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, as long as we lived under his roof. He was also known as the entertainer and host of the family. Every few years he hosted a big family reunion in our backyard for over fifty people. Then the dread holiday season where we had to dress up and go to family holiday dinners, nothing more than my siblings and I hated. My dad even wore the chef’s hat every Sunday, he would make a big pot of poppa secret sauce and have a tradition Sunday Italian family dinner. I may have dread the family things growing up, but now I appreciate them and try to make my own family

Next to the dining room table, one or two card tables were set with matching linens and plates, assuring everyone had a place to dig in to dinner. It was (and still is) an unspoken rule that all members of the Smith Clan living within driving distance of my parents’ home attend Sunday family dinner. The same rule applies to holiday meals as well. It wasn’t until years later, early in my marriage, that I ate my first holiday dinner alone with just my husband. It was also the last.…

Spending time with them was a type of caregiving that they longed for i would realize later in life as i moved from job to job, college to college, wondering what my purpose would be. My siblings and i were used to spending time with the elderly as the grandchildren spent every weekend at our grandparents home up the street. As a child my grandfather would round up all the kids for church every Sunday. We 'd groan about the prospect of spending a couple of hours being bored to tears while listening to the preacher drone on about faith and purpose in life; but we were there every Sunday, rain or shine. Afterwards our grandmother would prepare a huge Sunday feast and all of the grandchildren would play at our grandparents feet and listen to stories after dinner, and head advice about what this child would become and what that child would do with his or her life.…

That was not the case. Although he lived 1,500 miles away, my father has always been a major factor in my life. I would spend all summer with him, which was my favorite because he would let me do activities that my mother typically would not, like playing video games or eating junk food. Along with seeing him all summer, I would also see him every holiday. My mother would invite him over for Thanksgiving dinner every year.…

It matters most that I leave a legacy for my baby brother. As a first-generation American, I resonate with the stories of seeking a better life and building a legacy for my family and community, paving a way that has often never been seen within my family. For 13 years, I grew up with my mother, father, and older brother. We routinely went to Savannah, GA every Thanksgiving to visit my mom’s family, but there was one holiday visit that was unforgettable. The day before Thanksgiving there were eight of us sitting at the dinner table when my parents informed us that next year we would need to add another chair to the table.…

One year I went to Outback Steakhouse and another year I went to Olive Garden. After dinner we would go to a church where they decorated it to be the best night. Every year, there was lots of dancing and prizes (and I would win sometimes!). The thought of my dad putting everything aside just to make my night special meant so much to me. I loved going to the father daughter dance every…

Growing up in the late 80s through the 90s seemed like such a long time ago. I grew up in a one story house which consisted of myself, my mother, older brother and sister. I was the baby of the family so evenings consisted of arguments with my siblings, dinner, and followed by sports or playing outside. On Fridays after school, I would head to the west side of Columbus for the weekend to spend time with my father, grandmother and other paternal relatives that lived nearby. I loved the time I spent out west with my father.…
