previously, before my junior year in high school I was not assigned any essays or critical writing assignments, however during my junior year our teacher assigned our class numerous essays, critical reading, and critical writing assignments. For the first assignment of the year my class was assigned a 2 page paper on the poem My Father Moved Through Dooms of Love by EE Cummings. Since I did not have any critical writing expirence I panicked, because I felt overwhelmed and I did not know where to start nor how to format my paper. On the assignment I received a failing grade, but my teacher gave me the opportunity to resubmit my essay, upon the resubmission my grade went from 54 to a 85 percent. On the first day of class, I felt pretty confident about my level of skills as a writer, but little did I know there were a lot of aspects in my writing that could be improved. As time progressed and we learned more about colloquial language and little things I could change in my essays to further advance and improve my writing. Now, I feel even more confident about my writing and know that all of these little changes I can make in my writing create a better flow of ideas and a higher level of formality. I feel that throughout this semester I have been greatly challenged as a writer and have advanced the most that I ever have in writing within such a short period of time. I have put in a lot time and effort into this class in order to create…

The transition from High School can often times be very frustrating for students. L. Lennie Irvin opened my eyes to one of the bad habits I picked up on in High school. The habit of straying from the topic or theme could cause me to fail not only papers in English but my other courses as well. I personally had a hard time with English my first semester of college. In High school I was always at the top of my class and my teachers would tell me how great of a writer I was.…

Honestly, I am not a very motivated person. I tend to try hard in school for the sole purpose of receiving an A. I never had thought of learning as an activity, but rather a priority. A priority that exists once again, for the purpose of getting an A. In my head, if I received an A, I would feel secure and my life would be able to move along smoothly. Receive a B, and my whole world would stop. Sadly, it seemed almost impossible for me to receive even close to a B when it came to writing.…

Throughout my educational career standardized testing has been a major part in determining whether or not you can proceed to the next grade or whether you have to take the class again. A Lot of kids that were my age when I had to take the STAAR test usually dreaded having to take a standardized test like the STAAR English II exam. I was no different, I was one of those kids who just wanted to get this test done with and move one. For a while this philosophy of mine worked, however that all would change when I ended up failing the English II STAAR test during my sophomore year of high school. Thus leading to a change in how I would view standardized testing and how my writing composition skills would eventually improve and affect my life.…

As a young child at school, we had the Accelerated Reading Program. It was a program that encouraged children to read various books, and then after to take a quiz based on the books. This program really helped me, because the program pushed me to read more. Since I am bilingual, learning two languages as a child was a bit challenging for me, and learning how to read was even harder. I would sometimes mix up letters, vowels, and sometimes talk in Russian when I was supposed to talk in English.…

As I walked past the TV, the tiny green creature in the screen suddenly caught my vision. His name was Mike Wazowski, a student in the Monster University. For the next one and a half hour, I watched Wazowski struggled to achieve his dream of becoming a scarer. During the process, he demonstrated courage, intelligence, and, most importantly, perseverance. As I watched him continuously practiced his scaring skills, I felt connected with this tiny green monster.…

Throughout much of my time in school I have always been assigned some sort of writing assignment; that could be a two or three page essay or just a writing assignment, but I have always felt confident in my work when they are turned in. In my works that I have turned, I have always received a quite acceptable grade until the first day of school my junior year. I signed up for the American Studies course with Mrs. Gilly and that day I realized that my previous works for other classes would not be acceptable for her standards. At first, I had underestimated her and her class, but that thinking did not last long. Within a week of her class, I had started on the path for excellence.…

What is Plagiarism? When you use someone else’s words, thoughts, or ideas as your own, while writing a paper, that is called plagiarism. This can even include their pictures. At any point in the paper, if you did not give the original creator the proper credit for their originality and work, you have initially stolen from them.…

Like I previously stated I learned how to do many things with my writing this semester. The first essay we wrote, a narrative, was probably my favorite essay to write. Although it was my favorite, it was definitely not my best. I wrote my essay and felt like it was complete and worthy to turn in. Little did I know that was not the case.…

Throughout this semester of English 101, writing has become more of a skill than a struggle. Writing was a challenge that I dreaded when I chose to be in the course, nonetheless with time, I learned from my mistakes and was able to improve. This course made me very doubtful on whether I could be capable of even writing a paper that would provide me with a decent grade, but at the same time made me push myself in my writing technique. In the end, I can reflect that I learned from my mistakes and wrote papers that took time and dedication to accomplish. I learned from this class to be confident in my writing and make all the mistakes to receive the grade I want in the end.…

Writing an essay about my experience as a writer and how I feel when I write. I thought should be a breeze until, I received my grade back. It was not a horrible grade, nor what I was expecting. When reading the teacher’s comment “While you did write your response in several paragraphs, it isn 't fully a reflective essay. To be an essay, it must include an introduction paragraph that ends with a thesis/focus sentence, supporting body paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph.”…

The one area over the years which I have the most problems in my English class is creative writing. For instance, our writing assignment for the Christmas holiday in the fourth grade was to create a famous person from an inanimate object and to give him a backstory. As I sat in my room pondering, I saw a sock. I immediately had an inspiration to create Socky Balboa, a famous boxer who was made of a sock. I based my story on the story of Rocky Balboa.…

From taking too many classes, along with working my very first job, to dropping two classes and barely passing the ones that I am still taking. Although the challenges did affect me and how my performance in English 102, that is not an excuse. I have been using my challenges as a crutch for too long. My mother always told me, "God comes first, then school and everything else will fall in line.…
