Family myths or narratives occur when distorted beliefs or historical events are shared between family members that end up enabling rules that govern the family system. A family member that tragically committed suicide over generations becomes a story about how this person died peacefully in their sleep. Myths such as harmony or safety help families avoid conflict shape rules within in the family. When being asked how family life is, a member will answer that they have no problems within their family thus perpetuating the family myth (Nichols, 2013).

She is emotional and does not make good decision while upset. She is distressed by Lester’s new found freedom and decides to end his life while crying and yelling that she will no longer be a victim. Jane seems well differentiated from her parents as she makes her own decisions regarding her relationship with her friends. Lester seems to let his emotions rule him and begins to live more authentically. His substance use and car purchase are impulsive and not well thought out. Lester been let go from his job and he spends his severance unwisely (Cohen & Jinks, & Mendes, 1999, & Nichols, 2013).
Despite the flaws displayed in the Burnham family, each person manages to find some personal growth and differentiation from the family system. Jane has plans to move with Ricky, Carolyn plans to move on with her life with Lester, and Lester finds beauty in the life that he has lived. Ricky is able to escape his father’s rigid and abusive disciple although he may continue to be a drug dealer. If Lester had not been murdered perhaps he may have continued his personal growth and would have left his loveless
