Family Essay: My Mother And My Family

Decent Essays
To me, family is an essential component of life. I grew up with my mom, dad, and three older siblings. I can’t imagine growing up without them, or even being a single child. My parents and siblings have all contributed to the person I am today. My family is special in the way that we are all down to earth and sensible, and we can always do whatever needs to be done. Throughout all our hardships, we’ve managed to keep moving forward and stay close. I have my parents to thank for raising us kids in that fashion. My relationship with each family member varies greatly, but I love each of them dearly. Even though we don’t express our affection in obvious ways, my family is strong and caring. My family is my rock and my foundation, despite how obnoxious …show more content…
We get along best when we’re joking or poking fun at each other. He doesn’t like to admit it, but Paul can be a very sensitive person. I like being able to banter with him while still having serious conversations every so often. My brother’s long term girlfriend Chelsey is basically part of the family too. She was there to help take care of my mom, and spends plenty of time with Kristy and me. She’s ridiculously generous and kind, and she’s a great listener. I consider her my sister. My oldest sister Mary is nine years older than me and lives in the next town over with her husband Matt. Mary and I are very similar in personality; we’re both strong headed and love a good debate. Even though we don’t talk as much as I do with my other siblings, Mary has probably taught me the most in life, whether she knows it or not. I look up to her because she has a job she enjoys, a lovely house, and a great relationship with Matt. I hope that I will be as successful as her. Mary’s husband Matt is the clown of the family. He’s constantly cracking jokes and making everyone laugh. He’s very easy to talk to and be around, and I’m happy to have him as a …show more content…
We have very different opinions on social matters, and that can cause problems between us. But when we’re not battling it out about presidential candidates, we enjoy each other’s company. My dad seems to know everything about everything. He’s smart in history, geography, the economy, religion, and he can fix almost any piece of machinery. He even knows a fair bit of Spanish. I used to take for granted how much he knows, but growing up I realized that not everyone is as wise or sensible as he is. My dad is where I got most of my common sense and real-world knowledge, as well as a few stupid dad

I chose my dad to be the logical smart one, not only because he is a very smart and knowledgeable person, but also he is the person that keeps everyone else in the family strong and somewhat level headed. My dad is a very witty and sarcastic person and because of this he is very funny, but only if you under stands when he’s being funny and when he is being serious. I interviewed my seventy-five year old grandpa Donnie, researched the Voyles lineage book that my grandma Arlene helped compile, and talked with my dad in order to find out more about my family’s history. According to Grandpa Donnie, it all began in 1759 when Jacob Voils, his wife, and his four sons landed in Port Charleston from Wales. Jacob was a poor man and could not afford the family’s way to Charleston. Desperate, he made a deal with the ship’s captain to indenture his oldest son William Voils as a crew hand for four years in exchange for the family’s way. Upon regaining his freedom, William furiously changed the spelling of his last name to Voyles to break all ties from his father Jacob.…

Because everyone on this side of the family resides in New Jersey, I have not been able to spend as much time getting to know them. Some members I have only met once or twice. However, something I did discover is that personality wise, we have been known to be reserved and hold our emotions inside until we cannot hold them in any longer.
