How I Learned the Truth about My Family History The stories that I have heard while growing up in the Adcock family sometimes seemed rather far-fetched. Though hearing them from my grandfather, I always assumed them to be true. He told my family many stories. There were stories about the store my family owned, and about how my grandfather fought in the war. There were stories about the hard times and stories about how life was so good “back in the day”. I was very relieved at the fact. My ancestors were actually relatively good people. Or they were at least good people compared to what I had always been taught about them. I managed to link my family together generation by generation starting with my father. I made it all the way back to the very first known Adcock of my direct family line. It was all so very interesting. I wished I had started digging sooner. I became so immersed in the details that I was learning. I first learned that the true story about my family does not even start in Ireland. It all started in Leicestershire, England. In 1513, Alexander Adcocke was born. He was of Scotch-Irish descent. His grandson’s name was John Adcock. He was a Lieutenant of the British Navy. In 1637, John was sent to America of the ship “Expectation” by King Charles I. He actually assisted in settling a town on Queen’s Creek near the York River in Virginia. Finding my true family history was wonderful. I was amazed and completely overwhelmed. I felt as if I was full of knowledge. The feelings that came over me to know that one of my ancestors possibly made an impact on the history of America after all these years of thinking my family was full of heinous criminals was astounding. There is still far more research that I plan to do in the future, but for now I am happy. I am happy just knowing the
