The movie “Parenthood” showed me family are the people you know will always be around, even if you do not have the best relationship with them. My relationship with my family has changed drastically over the years. When I was about 5 or 6 years old, my family were the people in my life that I looked up to for everything. Whether it was how to ride a bike, what games to play, or what to say, I strived to be just like my older brother and my Mom and Dad were my biggest role models. Yet as I grew older, my roles models and influences changed. My friends at school started to impact my decisions more than my siblings and parents. I consider it was inevitable for me to grow apart from my brothers, being that I lacked a sister figure to bond with. Nowadays, much like the families in “Parenthood”, my family and I’s relationship is a work in progress.
A relationship I relate to the most from “Parenthood” is the single mom and her daughter’s. The roller coaster relationship they share reminds me of the relationship I have with my mother. At home, some days she will be my best friend while others we can be at each other’s throats. When we fight we scream, yell and get in each other’s faces. I think this is because we are very much alike; both of us can become frustrated very easily. Often, I feel like my mom is the worst person in the world, she does not know anything and I would just be better off without her.
