My Family Genogram Examples

A genogram is an interesting way to look at your family. This experience was fun to do and taught me how I can graph out my family history. My parents were a big help with project and enjoyed talking to me about their siblings and parents. My mother’s side of the family is much bigger than my fathers. My mother is also much closer to her side of the family than my dad is to his. I never knew either set of grandparents and this experience taught me more about them. I learned that my grandfather Holcomb was in World War II and my grandmother Holcomb was a welder for the war. My mom and her siblings did not have a close relationship with their father because he was an alcoholic towards their mother. This made sense to me in how my uncles treat alcohol and their own relationships. My mother told stories of how her and her siblings worked constantly to help their mom on the farm and no matter what their mom always kept a full meal on the table. My grandfather died in his due to a brain aneurism. This left my grandmother to take care of 6 kids on her own. My father’s parents were more of free spirits based off of what I gathered. Knowing what is happening in your family can explain where you get your own views. As a future school counselor, this assignment is relevant to my students and myself. By creating a genogram with my students, we can see their family system. This will provide a visual for students to map out their family and their relationships. I can see doing this with younger and older students to determine who influences their lives. This can also be used to see what careers are dominate in a family with older students. The great thing about a genogram is it can be used in many different ways. If I were to add college degrees to my genogram, you only see degrees with my first and second
