Reading Autobiography

I have always been known by my family and in school as an avid reader. Early on, my mom, a former elementary school teacher herself, fostered in me a burning desire for reading and a love to get lost in a book. In grade school, I was known to finish my math and other more “boring” work as quickly as possible so that I could get back to whichever story I was reading at the time. As I got older, reading for pleasure took a backseat to homework, a social life, and other hobbies. I believe I will always be a life long reader, just in varying degrees through the different stages of my life. Growing up, my mom made reading large part of my life; she always read to me and my sisters before bed and trips to the library for preschool story time or to check out books to read myself were common. In preschool and kindergarten it was picture books; Froggy, The Berenstain Bears, and Arthur. As I progressed through elementary school we moved on to several chapter book series; Junie B. Jones, Animal Ark, and the Saddle Club. Reading a bedtime story was a …show more content…
However, reading has not always looked the same for me. Gone are the days where I have the motivation and the energy to stay up all night reading a book. I try to read one novel every summer while I lay by the pool or on the beach, but other than that I do my best just to spend a few minutes in the morning or before bed reading a blog or an inspirational book. Reading will always be a valued part of my life and I look forward to the days when it will have a claim on my time. One day, I will read a book a week. One day, I will read a story to my children every night and teach them to delve into stories with all of their heart and imagination like my mother did for me. One day, I will have a large library for my grandkids to come pick from when they need a good story. Alas, today is not that day, but one day

Reading is undervalued in today’s society. Not many students understand the importance of reading and how useful it is in life. When I was, younger reading was never my strongest subject. Reading at a lower level than others in my class made me feel less educated. It wasn’t like I pushed reading away, it was just something that I wasn’t interested in.…

My family wasn’t around a lot when I was younger. My mom and dad both worked full time jobs, and the age gap between my sisters and I made it hard for us to enjoy spending time together. I’ve always felt that the big age gap between me and everyone in my family always affected our closeness. They all seemed so grown up, understanding things that I had yet to grasp, and doing things that I wasn't able to do. I longed to be able to be as grown up as the rest of my family.…

My first memory of reading was when I was little, about 4 or 5, and my mom would read to me when I was going to bed. By far my favorite book that she would read to me was “Where The Wild Things Are”. I loved the way the booked looked with the faded looking colors that made it look old and I loved the pictures of the wild things and how the kid was the king and everyone listened to him and I just loved it.…

And to be able to read books to them from a very early age in their lives. In my pass school work I used to skim through texts for answers instead of reading through word-for word. The first thing I would like to state is that remembering where I wrote my reading logs was the hardest thing to do. As I was looking at my reading log I would see how uneven the numbers would very. Like one week I would read around 57 pages but the next only 33. So as I looked back in my books, I realized that when I get bored with the book I tend to just skim read. But when I read a part I really like I will read it over three times to soak up the information.…

Ironically, though I wasn’t immediately taken with reading, I became an avid reader after those first few difficult years. I was a regular at my elementary school’s small library, and I competed in everything book-related that I could. Battle of the books, spelling bees, and English classes were my favorite pastimes in grade school. Other children dreaded completing summer reading and literature studies, but I looked at reading…

Ever since I was a little girl, I absolutely loved reading. My parents read to me at a young age and continued to expand my knowledge by buying book after book. Not only did I enjoy the story and being able to read, but I also enjoyed that one hour of quality time with my mom or dad.…

Being competitive, in elementary I remember constantly reading to earn the most accelerated reading points in the class. Outside of school my parents were subscribed to Scholastics, so every month I would receive three new books each month from the Dr. Seuss collection as well as from the Disney books collection. My scholastic collection was immense, and I read every book at least three times. Once I had extensive practice reading short books, I moved onto chapter books. When I was introduced to chapter books, Twilight the movie began its press tour and I decided to read the entire book prior to watching the movie.…

Growing up, I learned that reading was pleasurable and entertaining. Because my parents and grandparents always had bookshelves full of interesting books to entertain myself with, I never had a reason to become bored. As I laid in bed with my mother, I asked her, “Will you come read with me tonight?” Reading from Mother Goose Nursery Rhymes entertained me the most. Although I memorized each of the simple rhymes, I always asked mother to read them over and over again.…
