Purpose Of Family Education

A family could be composed of different individuals, whether it is by blood or not. However, I believe that a family is composed of a man and a woman who decide to join their lives together through couple relationships. When a couple joins their lives and decides to have children, this represents a model of a nuclear family. This belief is based on my faith and my cultural background. In addition, I believe that a family could be a grandmother who is raising grandchildren, or someone who has adopted a child; however, as a family life educator, the individuals who I work with, will define what a family means to them, and my job as a family life educator is to respect it and to help them gain the knowledge necessary on how to create an optimal …show more content…
I personally identify myself with the “transmission perspective” presented by Darling and Cassidy (2014). This ideology fits my personality because I strongly believe that a family life educator transmits knowledge, skills, and culture awareness. However, I also believe that when a family life educator works with couples to make good choices for the wellbeing of their families, all the family will benefit from those choices. For example, family life education with couples that focus on managing finances has a broader reach than having only one member trying to learn new skills because when couples work unanimously to reach a goal, it is more productive. The knowledge and the skills that the couple gains through workshops presented by a family life educator could impact their lives in regards of their finances and other areas of their …show more content…
The family life educator should not discriminate or be indifferent against someone, just for the way they look. Also, the programs need to be compatible to different ethnicities, meaning people from different cultures and beliefs; for example, Hispanic, German, French, and individuals from other cultures. I believe that the programs presented by a family life educator should have content that involves information that is culturally competent because a family life educator who is open to support families of all races and ethnicities will be able to reach a bigger population. For example, if I bring workshops that only benefit Hispanic families because I am Hispanic, then the other families from other ethnicities who are also eager to learn new skills could be left out. One clear example, could be teaching English classes. I could discourage individuals who are not Hispanic, when teaching English classes if I constantly refer to the Spanish grammar to compare it with the English grammar; individuals whose Spanish is not their first language would feel left out. As a family life educator, I need to learn about the cultures of the population I serve so I can bring workshops that would fit all ethnic groups in the community that I serve.

In society, a family is made up of two or more members, that can be related by blood, marriage, or adoption. But around the world some people have a family that is different from other's based on the way their culture has taught them to be. A better way to understand the meaning of family is to apply the three major sociological theories. The first theory is the Functionalist by Emile Durkheim which explains that society has to follow certain functions and how the basic needs are helpful to live in any kind of society there is in this world. The way to understand this theory by applying it to family is the incest taboo that makes mandatory to look for a partner from a different family that is not your own.…

Relationships in Japan “Nuclear Family” is a term I had not heard of until this past year. It is defined as “a couple and their dependent children, regarded as a basic social unit.” This is what the typical family looks like, however, in the three works we read and watched in class, The Old Capital, Woman in the Dunes, and Ikiru, the families are not typical. The Old Capital centers on a girl named Chieko, who is adopted by a loving couple, but she learns she has a sister and that her biological parents are dead. In Woman in the Dunes, the main character, Jumpei becomes trapped in a sandy village with a resident woman, who he eventually builds a relationship and possibly has a child with.…

When looking up the definition of family online, it states that a family consists of parents and children residing under the same roof, related to by blood or marriage. Although it may have been true in the past, it doesn't represent family in today's society. Today, children are being cared of by one parent, homosexuals, or their grandparents. My Life as a Zucchini directed by Claude Barras shows that most families aren't like the picture-perfect families shown on TV and they don't have to be blood related.…

As I sit and think of what a family consist of, I am reminded of how gracious God is. Without going into too much detail, I was raised in four different families types, that included: nuclear family, foster family, step-family and a single parent family. Idealy one would think that I had no concept of what a perfect family is. Thankfully, through Christ, I was able understand what a biblical family looks like. There is not a complete secret code manual of what a family should be and how a family should work.…

Family, a familiar term that can be defined in various ways. Some may define family as a group of people who are related to each other by blood, others as people who care one another. This is impossible to describe a changeable concept like the family. The world is constantly growing and evolving, making it hard to define the family and expect everyone to live the same expectations. The family is socially constructed and not biological, and that is why there is not an alternative definition of the family. The best way to describe a structure of the family is by creating a list of characteristics and elements that would allow everyone’s personal situation fit the category of being identified as a family. In order to accept this is by understanding the sociological imagination.…

Starting off this class with reading what Family Ministry is defined as opened up my view on how Family Ministry can be diverse in a variety of understanding. Diana Garland stated that “family ministry is any activity that directly or indirectly (1) forms families in the congregation community; (2) increases the Christlikeness of the family relationships of Christians; or (3) equips and supports families for the work to which they are called together.” Earlier in the reading she stated that “The flurry of programs called family ministry is the fear that Christian families are falling apart and need churches to strengthen and support them.” Diana Garland’s definition is what I strive for in ministry and I believe that she also is aware…
