Personal Experiences That Shape My View Of Myself

Throughout my life I have had countless experiences which shape my view of myself and how others view me. The majority of those experiences I learned from home, where my environment was most constant and my parents were the authority figures. Like any family, my family faced conflict. Whether it was between both of my parents, me and my brothers, or the children in opposition of the parents, there would be some type of disagreement. This disagreement was communicated to me verbally and nonverbally in a variety of ways- not all being positive. But these experiences have influenced how I now communicate within my social environment comfortably and how I recognize myself when communicating. I find that I can talk more to my friends about personal matters than I could my immediate family. These friends are not just randomly picked either. They are the people I consider to be my brothers- the people I consider to be my family. I find talking to this family gives me a sense of confidentiality and security, as for news in my immediate family spreads like wildfire. These friends are just about my age as well, so I am able to relate to their experiences as well. This is the feeling of a transactional family relationship because the emotional ties and experience we have together gives me the confidence to know that this information will remain between us. But even so, my immediate family approves of this openness. As long as I get out what I have to say to people that care about what I am saying, they are in full support. My family, under this personal theory, falls under the pluralistic family type.
