Teacher Observation Essay

During my experiences observing the second grade class this semester, I have noted a few levels of questioning that the teacher employs. The level of questioning that the teacher uses the most is literal questions. This level of questioning is present when the teacher asks about main idea, sequence, and/or similarities and differences. The teacher that I observe asks the students the main idea of read alouds that they encounter and the sequence of steps in a procedure (such as writing a draft in a graphic organizer). The second level of questioning that the teacher uses when asking questions is inferential. Inferential questioning is presented throughout the entire day. The teacher may ask how students came up with an answer in regards to context clues and picture clues. For example, the teacher may ask, “What made you think that speckled is a synonym for spotted?” The teacher may also ask if the student’s background knowledge helped them answer questions. Inferential questioning appears quite often throughout the day due to inferential experiments in …show more content…
When the teacher uses connections from previous experiences it is referred to as text to self. Another form of making connections is text to text. This is where students make connections to other books, television show, or movies. Finally, there is making connections based on text to world. Text to world is when the teacher relates what is read to what may happen (or has happened) in the world. All three levels of making connections are present within my observation classroom. Another reading strategy that the teacher has the students employ is using inferences. This is where the students draw inferences based on asking questions. For example, if the students were reading a mystery story, they may be able to infer what has happened based on asking

Introduction The Strive Smart Preparatory School is located west of Denver in a predominately Latino community. The high school is surrounded by homes that are lower middle income where a majority of the students qualify for free lunches. Community quilts were made for the Strive Smart School and one of my community. The following is a comparison of both quilts, the mission of the school, and instructional strategies to determine the best way to educate English language learners using the second language acquisition theory.…

Socratic questioning dates back to the 5th century BC, when an Athenian named Socrates questioned his fellow people to deliver their knowledge of good or evil (Knezic et al., 2010). In this essay, I will compare two ways a Socratic method of questioning can be used in a modern classroom based on Gershon (2013) writing on tried and tested method on how to challenge and stretch your…

Best Practice that Support ELA Common Core Standards In Classroom Instruction that Works: Research-Based Strategies for Increasing Student Achievement, written by Ceri B. Dean, Elizabeth Ross Hubbell, Howard Pitler, & BJ Stone, is a best practice book with many useful suggestions for improving instruction in the classroom. Within the city of Corpus Christi, there is evidence of economic disparity. I discovered this through my experience with the Junior Achievement (JA) program, and through data collected and observations made on my assigned school and its neighborhood, and of other JA schools in the city of Corpus Christi. All data and observations were collected to show comparisons between each JA school. The information found is valuable because it is important to know about both the physical side of a community and the economic side of a community, and how they compare to each other, as well as how they compare to other communities within a city. Junior Achievement is an organization dedicated to educating young children about branches that deal with economics,…

Before actually watching the video “Responding to Literature, “In writing this paper, I thought this was a good quote from the narrator as he said, “I see my role in two ways. One is as a reader, and second responding just like the kids while having a watchful ear on how their reading and thinking are going and how they are growing through the story and learning. [While] I'm helping kids make connections, at the same time I want to be involved in that reading and thinking process myself in a natural way. I don't want to come up with a 'teacher question'... I want to show my own reactions and my own responses as a reader..."…

Interactive reading has three main components that occur prior to reading the book, during the read aloud, and after the story has been read. The class will preview, read, and discuss the book together as a whole. Interactive writing also involves the collaboration of the entire class to transform their thoughts into words on a paper. Both interactive activities involve the teacher asking questions that will guide the children to completing the desired tasks. Before a story is read aloud the teacher needs to introduce it thoroughly by explaining the genre.…

In all of my time of attending Homedale Middle School, I have witnessed many groups of students more increasingly each year. I supposed that each year I become more aware and observant of the life around me--specifically, others’ lives. Some cliques I see only outside, playing football or staying far out into the fields. But others I see every day, chatting in class, eating together at lunch, or even rough-housing in the hallways between periods, which causes chaos for everyone else and blocks our path to class. Even though this is the case, it is easier to identify certain types of groups at lunch.…

The students will also be assessed by their ability to make an inference while reading their independent reading book. During Daily Five, the students will be asked to make an inferce as they read. This form of assessment will help me recognize the students that have a true understanding of this skill and are able to use the skill independently. I plan to use the results of this assessment to tailor my future lesson. If I notice during the turn and talk that not a lot of students understand the skill, I know that I will need to continue modeling my thinking when making an inference.…

I really enjoyed the time I spent in Mrs. Flinn’s fourth grade classroom over Spring Break. I was able to observe for a total of four hours between Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning. During my time with the fourth graders, I took a closer look at the solid behavior classroom supports being used. Along with these supports, I was extremely impressed by the way Mrs. Flinn handled classroom management. Even though I observed during a very exciting week, she had great control over her students.…
