My Experience With Stereotypes In High School

Improved Essays
It was the beginning of my junior year of high school that I was already feeling the pressure heavily on what college I should attend that would guide in the best way for my chosen career. During a break period, my friends and I were walking into a hallway speaking about the colleges we thought about attending when suddenly a student bumps into me, almost knocking me down completely, turned back and said, “Watch it wetback!” Shocked beyond words of expression that I had just encountered my first experience with racism. My mind was racing, contemplating whether or not to say something back, but I was already speaking by the time I could make a decision in my head yelling back, “How dare you assume and use such a derogatory term to me!” His response? …show more content…
And yet, as a person of Hispanic background, all of the above stereotypes are what Hispanics deal with on a daily basis. In college, I am a minority within other minorities. In high school, there were students who lived up to those stereotypes. They were the troublemakers, the uneducated ones, the “beaners”, your stereotypical Hispanics.
I did not grow up in a poor home or an uneducated home. My parents have always wanted better for me. They wanted more from me than the stereotypical Hispanic is expected to get from life, which is not very much. I was an honors student in high school, played the cello, and an active member of the community. I did all the right things, so why is that in all my accomplishments I am only ever asked how my cultural challenges got me where I am today? Why does the fact that I am Hispanic mean I cannot be a normal candidate to be successful?
If I have overcome anything in life so far, it is those Hispanic stereotypes waiting for me to fail and prove them right. These stereotypes are embedded in our lives. Those standardized tests we take that ask to fill our racial group, they carry those stereotypes within them because from that Hispanics are always one that score lowest. People expect us to be dumb, and some Hispanics will let themselves live up to that expectation. I, on the other hand, refuse to live up to that low standard and I will work to raise it up everyday by keeping my grades up and become successful in life so I can proudly say, “ I am not one of your

Most people feel that they know all about stereotypes and probably think they know most of their risks, but that is not the case. The definition of a stereotype is any commonly known public belief about a certain social group or a type of individual. Stereotypes are often created about people of specific cultures or races, but everyone can be affected by stereotyping which makes it a big, ongoing problem to this day. There are many ways to stereotype a person, such as, all white Americans are obese, lazy, and dumb; men who spend too much time on the computer or read are geeks; all Mexicans are lazy and come into America illegally; all Arabs and Muslims are terrorists; or even positive stereotypes, like that all Americans are friendly, generous,…

A negative narrative I was told is that just because I am a young Hispanic high school student living in America means I must have struggled in my early ages of life to be where I'm at today right? Wrong. My life was not based on me being an immigrant or my mother didn't run around chasing the boy who “hit it and quit it” for child support money and just because the crime, teen pregnancy, or the number of high school dropout rates go up does not mean I have something to do with it. I refuse to be any of these stereotypes.…

Crack open a dictionary and there would be a bountiful of adjectives to describe me. I am quirky but well composed, shy but very loud, and sometimes a bit dimwitted but also secretly a genius. Unfortunately people do not take time to learn things in depth, they simply judge from looks. As a result, to people I am a hispanic girl; a person who probably barely graduated high school, probably lives in the bad side of town, and may indulge in some illegal hobbies here and there. News flash, I am much more than than what hollywood depicts my culture to be.…

After reading the story “The myth of the Latin Woman”, I was not surprised that people still to this day carry the mindset of racial stereotyping. Even though that no matter how much a person tries to avoid being prejudged and cast away from their culture, they would still be judged from what people see portrayed in the media. However even until this day, I am and will forever be a victim of being labeled due to the color of my skin in this society. I myself as well as others in society am guilty of stereotyping Latino women due to what we see in the mass media. There was a time where I came across a Latino female, it was when I was hanging out with a group of friends, she walked past…

Most immigrant students are commonly doubted by many people, always told that we are not capable of success. When I moved to America from Philippines, everything was new to me, and I felt very alienated. The hardest part of moving to a different country was the language. Due to language barriers, no one really took me seriously causing my colleagues to doubt me. I was put into that stereotype where I was made to seem I was incompetent.…

Mexicans always viewed me as a brat who doesn’t know anything about being Mexican. I’ve always hated when Caucasians put me in the category of “chola” or “uneducated” and automatically think of me as a bad person when I tell them I’m Mexican because there is more to me than that. I could never fit in because like Pat Mora said in the poem “Illegal Alien” I was “too Mexican for the Americans and too American for the Mexicans.” (Mora, 40) Growing up, I was a happy, talkative, and social child. I loved being friendly and talking…

Being Hispanic is accompanied by a set of expectations from your family, go to school, get good grades, graduate college and high school and become successful at whatever field you choose. Many of these hopes and dreams include goals such as attending college to better themselves and to help out their families, but only a few actually have the opportunity to accomplish these goals.
