Personal Essay: My Experiences With Science

Decent Essays
My experiences with science are a little fuzzy. I can remember when I was in elementary (unsure of the grade), we went as a class to the high school side and watched them dissect a fetal pig. I also remember the same scenario but it entailed everybody in the school making a human chain by holding hands and they sent an electric shock through approximately 150 people.
When I was younger, I also remember making a solar system out of styrofoam balls; we painted them accordingly and made them into a mobile. I don’t remember the grade that I was in, nor the teacher. I remember when I was in the sixth grade and we were required to do a science fair project. I did my science fair project on which brand or flavor of gum lasted the longest, I actually won first place and had to go to the regional science fair in Escanaba. I must be a person that remembers things or learns things from hands on activities. I also remember my sixth grade teacher had us learn different kinds of leaves

The only thing I can remember from that class is goggles and trying to blow a 2 liter bottle up, I’m not even sure what was in it. I also remember taking observations on what we thought was in little paper bags by shaking them. My professor was pretty comical and a little quirky.
I only had two science teachers in high school that were strictly science teachers, they were very strict with procedures but I really enjoyed the classes. After sitting here and really having to pick my brain about this subject makes me realize that science is very interesting and that I really enjoy it. Like I said before, I am a hands on learner and I remember the things that I did by the experiments that required you to be involved instead of being lectured to or read out of the book. I didn’t really remember anything negative about science but I have always blocked negative things out of my

What was your favorite class (Atmosphere & Gases, Electricity & Magnetism, Cosmic Lander, Micrometeorites, or Lights & Lasers)? Why was it your favorite? What “science” did you learn in this class? My favorite class was the lights and lasers because I found how light really works and how our eyes see with different types of lights, also because I found it’s so cool how certain types of lights and lasers work on a special kind of glow in the dark wall.…

Seventh grade, my second year now at what I thought to be the worst school in the world. On back to school night I met a man who would change my perspective on life completely, that man being Brandon Lilly. Henry Adams once said “A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.” At a mere five-foot four he appeared to be a kid minus the burly lumberjack beard that he possessed. I remember being skeptical at first because I had never had a male teacher before.…

The most memorable unit from my educational experience occurred in my twelfth grade English class. The unit was a comparative reading about Beowulf and Gilgamesh, which entailed several discussion based lectures and a final paper comparing the archetypes of heroes and characters. For me, this unit was so interesting as we discussed what made a hero and the hero’s journey, during this time I was writing my own book. I connected with this lesson because of my experiences outside school; with this said, a friend of mine who was in the class with me recalls the unit as well. Though, our opinions of it differ.…

There are many misconceptions in astronomy. For example, many people (even Harvard graduates) believe that the reason that seasons exist is that the closer Earth is to the sun, the hotter it is, resulting in summer. Likewise, the further away the Earth is from the Sun, the colder it is, resulting in winter. We know that the reason seasons exist is because of the 23.5 degree tilt of the Earth. For instance, when Earth is on the right of the Sun, the tilt causes the northern hemisphere to be in the dark and the southern hemisphere to be illuminated in daylight.…

I was amazed to see internal organs with my naked eyes. The next dissections were a cow eyeball, to observe its anatomical structures, and an earthworm to learn about its circulatory system. Even in elementary school at annual Talent Show, I spoke about the solar system and displayed a model with rotating planets. My passion and past experiences made me pass entrance test at Troy High School, where the Honor Biology class allotted during my ninth grade, and by maintaining a grade I was allowed to have AP Biology during my Junior Year.…

I believe in applying knowledge to innovate and challenge the obstacles that are holding back the advancement of science. As such, a lab-based research thesis will give me the opportunity to critically think and apply what I learned so far academically and professionally to find solutions to the unanswered questions that lie at the scientific frontline. This experience will also allow me to further develop skills that will help me advance and excel towards my career in clinical research and medicine. Specifically, my interest in Dr. Matthew Holahan’s lab stems from my genuine interest in researching about concussions. My interest in concussion research started while preparing a literature review for NEUR3200 and later a poster presentation…

Learning Basic Medical Science has allowed me to learn a variety of new things that I had never even heard of before or done before like immunohistochemistry, solving case studies, and T1/T2 translational research. Immunohistochemistry was really interesting and complex. At first, I overlooked it because I thought it was my over my head and not applicable to me at the moment.
