My Experience With Reading Required To Read In School

Improved Essays
My experiences with reading have mainly consisted of what I was required to read in school. When book reports were assigned I tended to read books based on the mood I was in, therefore I would define myself as a mood reader. My interests in books are varied. I like fiction novels but I have also enjoyed reading some biographies. I occasionally read entertainment magazines and news articles on the internet. If a book is really good I can read for hours and get lost in the story. I like Nicholas Spark’s books and I am in the process of reading the Hunger Games series. The older I became the less I liked having something read to me which is probably the reason why I do not like audio books.

To say that I am a reader would be a stretch. I can not remember the last time I picked up a book for my own personal pleasure. Some would say that should bother me, but I can’t agree with the reasoning behind it. Mostly people bring up how books have broadened their horizons and changed their way of thinking, which is something I can’t relate to. Instead, I would say that I agree with what a good book should do, but I can‘t say I have found a good book, or a page turner if you will.…

As the great Bob Dylan once said,” The times they are a-changin’.” Now, currently in the twenty-first century according to www,huffingtonpost.com,” There's overlap between the groups -- 28 percent of respondents did not read a book at all in the past year, while 25 percent read between one and five books, 15 percent read between six and ten books, 20 percent read between 11 and 50, and eight percent read more than 50.” This quote proves fewer and fewer people read books in today’s world. One might say the reason this being is because people either have audiobooks and are being read to, are too caught up in social media, electronics T.V.,...etc. And some might say they just do not care.…

Developing Reading Proficiency In the article Children Teach Themselves to Read, Peter Gray offers a perspective on how and when your children should be taught to read. Or, rather, why your children shouldn’t be taught to read. Unfortunately, many schools are still convinced that children should be inundated with methods like phonics so every child in one grade can be on the same level. The underlying problem with this is that children are individuals; different methods of learning work for different children.…

I always read as a kid. I was the small boy who plowed through books day and night, my mom scrambling to and from the library just to keep up with me. The only thing fixated on my mind was reading a new book and being totally captivated by the plot. Since then, I read less and less, sometimes going months without finishing a book. I feel sad that I spend less and less days staying up to midnight just to read one ... more … page.…

Reading Literacy Narrative When I was a child, nobody has ever read to me. My father was too busy working, and my mom used to tell me stories by heart, not reading it from books. Until high school, I considered myself to be a very slow reader and I was always the last one to finish a test. This made me very insecure and embarrassed throughout my schooling, but I also think that it pushed me to work harder at finishing my tests quicker. I started to occasionally read in my free time during middle school. I always enjoyed reading series of books as a teenager, but now I enjoy reading books by the same author one after the other.…

In the quote by Christopher Columbus he states “By prevailing over all obstacles and distractions, one may unfailingly arrive at his chosen goal or destination” I thought this quote pertained to me because I know this year there are going to be many obstacles in English class, but if I just push myself I know I can reach my goal. As a reader and writer, I believe that I have grown stronger over the years. In the past, I did not like reading at all I would try to get by with reading as little of the stories as possible in order to pass. I felt this way until this summer when I started to read the books for English.…

How do experiences in reading effect our reading success? Often, good experiences turn into success, and bad experiences result in less success. I don't read very much, and that effects the way I read and how I feel about it. In “Sharon Cho” and “Kevin Clarke” from Speaking of Reading, Cho and Clarke discuss their personal experiences with reading and how it has effected their reading success. By comparing my own examples and Cho and Clarke’s examples, it can be inferred that experiences I'm reading greatly impact our reading success.…

Literature enthralls me, and by the power that the words have on one’s imagination and emotions. Literature captivates the potential to evoke one’s imagination and inspire creativity in anyone who starts to breathe in the precious words. Maya Angelou has the perfect quote to summarize how I feel about the power of literature and reading, “When I look back, I am so impressed again with the life-giving power of literature.…
