Ophthalmology Personal Statement

Since age fourteen, I spent the majority of my summer vacations working as an ophthalmic technician in my father’s practice. To this day he claims he asked me to work with him because the office was short-staffed, but I suspect he knew I would fall in love with ophthalmology just as he did. On my first day seeing post-operative patients, a woman was so moved by her improved vision that she began to cry. She grasped my father’s hand while she thanked us all. I felt honored to witness such a profound expression of joy, and at that moment I committed myself to pursuing a career in ophthalmology. I became obsessed with memorizing the anatomy of the eye and learning how to use all of my father’s instruments. I spent hours searching the internet …show more content…
During my summer research fellowship, I spent as much time as possible working alongside residents to care for patients in the emergency room at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. Not only did my time there further improve …show more content…
When classes resumed that fall, I used my position as president of the ophthalmology interest group to offer retinal screenings along with the
Hispanic community outreach group at a local Spanish speaking health fair. My dedication to working hard and exploring the field of ophthalmology has led me to multiple fascinating experiences throughout my third year of medical education, including assisting with vitrectomies and scleral buckling surgeries during my surgical rotation and the unique opportunity to participate in the care of pediatric ocular trauma. I intend to carry that dedication forward through my fourth year and residency by continuously working to improve my clinical knowledge and the quality of my work.

These experiences afforded me insight into what ophthalmology has to offer and prepared me to pursue a residency program in the field.
Now I am looking to work with a group of talented and diverse ophthalmologists and residents who share my passion for the field as well as compassion for the patients. Throughout my residency I will hone my skills and take advantage of the resources available at

Since my second semester at UT, I have devoted 15 hours a week to volunteering as a Young Life leader. Every week I help run a club meeting for dozens of high school kids, manage a planning meeting with my teammates, and lead a small group for sophomore girls. I spend hours at St. Stephen’s Episcopal School watching games and performances, and simply getting to know these young adults. Through investing this time to build relationships as a mentor and role model, I strove to show these girls that they are significant, noticed and valued. Volunteering as a Young Life leader has taught me invaluable lessons in building relationships, caring for others, and working with a team that will help me to be a more supportive and productive physician…

My family consists of mother, father, and brother who live in Germany. Growing up was as idyllic as one could suspect, in my prepubescent years we moved to the states in search of “gods’ plan” for us, starting a church in Texas. The church siphoned our resources to the brink of poverty, but we were happy all the same. Through the eyes of a jaded 5-year-old, everything was but a perfect utopia, neither a problem nor a care in the world.…

Some say the Civil War furthered medical intelligence, others say it prevented people from further study of the medical field. Surgeries back then were brutal and sometimes, unnecessary. Amputations, for example, existed among the army because bullets were stuck in the bones of the soldiers. Medics could not save two-thirds of wounded soldiers because they knew nothing about bacteria and the importance of sanitation. They dressed wounds with the same bandages on different people because the medics thought it would save supplies of bandages (Wegner).…

They call them “Tap-taps,” the brightly painted open back trucks that transport passengers through the dusty streets of Haiti. A traveler taps the side of the vehicle to board, pays, rides and then taps to jump off at a desired destination. For one particular man who sat with his face covered by a towel, that destination was the Diegue clinic in Port-au-Prince. All I knew from intake was that this patient was here for a foot issue. I noticed the adult sitting uncomfortably, a towel wrapping his foot, as his eyes scanned around the room.…
