Comparing My Mentor

Although both of my mentors have been excellent teachers, their classrooms have had very different room set-ups. Both mentor teachers have exhibited highly effective classroom management skills, even though they have both used different methods to accomplish this task. I have only been with my current mentor for one week, versus the eight weeks I spent with my first mentor, but I have already observed similarities and differences in the two mentors’ teaching styles.
The classroom where I completed my first student teaching experience was set up with rows of desks facing the front board. In each row, two student desks were touching. Having all desks forward-facing is the best arrangement for teacher-centered, direct instruction, and the two student desks together worked well for two students working as partners. However, when cooperative groups of more than two were formed, desks and/or chairs had to be rearranged to

Both classrooms have a smart board and projector that make utilizing technology in the classroom convenient. Unfortunately, the classroom computers did not work well in my first mentor’s classroom, and her students did not have the luxury of iPads or Chromebooks as my current students do. However, both teachers used the resources available to them in very effective ways. I know that even very young students are motivated by technology based learning and plan to include this in my own daily instruction whenever possible. My first mentor teacher uses a textbook for basic instruction, but includes a variety of other resources in each lesson. My current mentor is required to use all of the instruction in the text lessons, which leaves little time to incorporate much from other resources. I hope to find a way to use children’s literature and other sources, in addition to the text, for the lessons in my second student teaching experience and in my own

Jacie, I understand that you need help with finding ways to use technology to help the students that you work with. In my last class, EDCI 516 Reading in Content, we discussed and researched sources and websites that teachers can use as a tool to help improve, practice, and review site words, spelling words, reading comprehension, and mathematical skills with their students. I, myself, was not very familiar with technology and the utilization of it in a grade school classroom. After taking EDCI 516 and practicing using the Google search engine to locate web-based resources that I can use to work with elementary students, I now feel more comfortable using technology in a classroom setting.…

Throughout my observation time spent at Reese Elementary, I have had the opportunity to observe two teachers, Mrs. Church, who is a second-grade teacher, and Mr. Dohrmann, who is a fifth-grade teacher. The teachers teach different grade levels and have very different teaching styles which lead to differences in classroom management and assessment, as well as, other categories. Even though there are many differences between Mrs. Church and Mr. Dohrmann they also have many similarities, such as the way they handle discipline and motivation. During my observation hours in both classrooms, I noticed the classroom management procedures that both teachers use. Both teachers have a class schedule they go by to keep the students and themselves on task throughout the day.…

I am currently student teaching in a 4th grade classroom at Sunset Elementary under my master teach, Alissa Nakaji. Upon my first day, I instantly fell in love with the dynamics of the classroom. The classroom had colorful posters explaining rules, consequences, inspirational quotes, and a list of roles for each student (changed weekly). This classroom feels more like a community of students striving together to have an optimal learning experience instead of just one teacher demanding and controlling the students. It is very autonomous and the teacher is involved only when needed.…

ASIAN AMERICANS Cultural and ethnic identity of Asian students may clash with the American school system due to their beliefs that it is important to work together as a group and maintain an allegiance to their family. The American school system tends to give emphasis to individualism and a healthy competition between students. An Asian student will no doubt see that their ability to do well in school as a duty that they have to help maintain the family structure and failure to do well in school can result in stricter parenting styles at home. Asian children are taught from a very early age to respect those in authority, have a sense of responsibility toward their family members, and to maintain self-control.…

Building from the national framework set out by CUREE (2005), collaborative (co-)coaching is “a structured, sustained process between two or more professional learners to enable them to embed new knowledge and skills from specialist sources in day-to-day practice.” Purportedly, the main difference with coaching and that of mentoring is how you reach the conclusions of growth with your teaching and learning practice. Schwartz proposes positive thought centres on such things as a belief in your abilities, a positive approach to challenges, and trying to make the most of bad situations. It is true to say that not every day within your teaching career will be as successful as it could be, not every lesson outstanding, and you won’t always have…

As everyone talks about how amazing the Technology Management Program is at UCSB, I could not agree more and now fully understand what they mean and thoroughly enjoy these classes. I am excited to be able to apply our TMP 111 speaker’s ideas and advice to my day to day life in the present as well as influencing my decisions and choices for the rest of my life. The thing I enjoyed most about the speakers were their ability to relate back to us college students, and provide a realistic example that what we are doing right now directly impacts our future. Three principles I am taking away with me from this class correlate to motivation; because I have a small idea of what career path I want to follow but not a great amount of confidence I can get…

On Wednesday, October 7 at 3p.m., I met with my advisor; Summer Balcer to discuss my future college career plans. In addition to the winter mini session, I also am planning on taking Math 1314 during the first summer session and then possibly Government 2306 for the second summer session. Meredith also incorporated technology very frequently in her lessons. She had students make mind maps on chrome books as well as type up story they wrote. When she would have one small group and the rest of the class would be working on other work she had spelling activities to be done on different learning apps on an iPad. I think this helps with keeping the children attentive in the classroom. This school is very technology savvy in their classrooms.…
