Some would say literacy is the ability to use information that is either printed or written to better oneself. Personally, literacy is so much more than that. Literacy is using analytical thinking to achieve goals, develop knowledge, and help us reach our full potential. Over the past few years I have used my understanding of this subject to help me be the best I can be. The example that comes to mind when thinking of my experiences with literacy as developing knowledge is when I helped lead my team to final at TSA Nationals. Not knowing what I was getting myself into, I said yes. Chapter Team, as it turned out, had little to do with technology. Basically what it was is a fifteen minute mock business meeting with six members each with their own tasks. The president was in charge of the business meeting. He was to keep the conversation on topic and make sure everyone adhered to the rules of order. The vice-president was in charge of making committee reports and in heading committees. The secretary, which was by far the hardest position, had to keep minutes during the meeting. The treasurer did calculations on the financial report to find the current balance. The reporter did basically nothing, and the sergeant-at-arms set up the room in the correct way. Somehow, of course, I got stuck with the job of secretary even though I consider myself a terrible writer. I really did not want to let them down, especially since I was the new addition to the team. If the only thing I had to do was write minutes, I definitely could have done that, but there was plenty more. First of all I had to memorize my part for the opening ceremony which was two sentences and had to be verbatim. Another part which had to be memorized was the creed. The whole creed takes about a minute and a half to recite and we all had to say it in unison. The real problem though was I had to be an active part of discussions and making motions while also writing about what was being done. In the few practice session we had, I’ve never had a harder time writing anything
