My Experience With Breast Cancer

Decent Essays
The experience that has had the most profound affect on my life was when my mom battled cancer for the second time. I was in the second grade when she was diagnosed with breast cancer and at the time, I was unaware of how seriousness of her illness. As I grew through third, fourth, fifth, and sixth grade, my understanding of the situation climbed drastically and I witnessed my mom fight on as the most brave individual I have ever met. It was difficult for me to watch my mother be so sick that for weeks at a time she could not get out of bed without help. It was in these dark times for my family that I learned how to be brave even when I don’t believe in myself and to keep your head up high and smile because I am not sure how much time I have

In her article “I Did Everything Right And I Still Got Breast Cancer,” Suzanne Gilberg-Lenz gives her voice to the “Cancer prevention” that Cancer.org staff, in “Diet and Physical Activity: What’s the Cancer Connection?” seems to want to defend. I say “seems” because, like Suzanne, I’m not exactly sure there are ways to really prevent cancer. If it’s anything like what Cancer.org is adovcating when they call for a life of being physically active and eating healthy foods with a focus on plant-based foods then, I’m all for their program.…

I grew up in an upper-middle class, white, Catholic family, in the middle of suburban Cary, North Carolina. Culture was a term introduced in school with pictures of exotic places and bright wardrobes; history lived inside textbooks with stories of war and migration. My fourth grade family history project contained one piece of information: my great-grandmother sailed to the States from Italy in 1904. The little history and culture introduced by my family showed me who I do not want to become. While the teachings of Christianity shaped me into a compassionate, open-hearted person, I struggle to accept the dogma that followed it.…

A significant experience that I faced, was when I tore my anterior cruciate ligament in 2015. Because of it, I had to have knee surgery and spent most of the year doing physical therapy sessions and exercising at the local track. Also, since I was away sports for so long, I learned many things about myself including that there is much more to life than what is right in front of you. Once I learned this, I became more involved in my community and church by participating in service activities and also tried harder to get involved with my school's student body. I also learned to be thankful for my friends and family because of the way that they were supportive to me.…

After arriving to Wood Middle School as I would on any other day, I walked into the bustling commons area and noticed a herd of students scattered into their separate cliques. However, what immediately caught my eye was the number of teachers and administrators who clearly looked flustered and distressed. I soon left the commons area and headed towards the library to figure what exactly was going on. Sure enough, there was a cluster of teachers gazing at the library’s television in utter disbelief over what would soon become known as “The Stock Market Crash of 2008”. Even though I was only in the 6th grade, I still had enough competence to realize that this was not an ordinary day in the stock market.…

Army Brat When questioning myself on what experiences throughout my life have had an effect on my growing and I have learned from, I think of many different experiences. Though, the one experience that has had the most significant continuous impact on my life, the one I have gained the most knowledge from, would be growing up with a military parent. Being in a military family you learn a multitude of information at a very young age and see the world for what is actually is and not what it is made out to be. From living the military lifestyle from birth to now I’ve learned to mature as a very young adolescent, to be selfless, and to not take anything for granted.…
