Society predicts the norms in which we interact with individuals (Roos at. el., 2015). Our perception is that people will behave in a way that is predictable to us. When you give a greeting to someone; you expect a greeting in return. It is when others do not behave in a way that we expect; unpredictability exists. As I developed this skill at my field placement, I was challenged by the unpredictability of the staff members, especially the DVO group facilitator. I expected she would know I was an intern, with a lack of experience and knowledge. I had a pre-conceived notation that she would lead me into a level of confidence, the procedures of the group, and we would work as a team. As a social worker, when I engage with clients, who have developed unhealthy attachment with others, I understand the concept that this may be their first healthy relationship. As I build rapport with my clients accepting my own attachment deficiencies will assist with empathy and empowerment of the individual.
As I build relationships with co-workers, I need to express my discomfort with them professionally. Previous experiences in my life have caused a discomfort in trust, which caused me to approached employment confrontations with caution. The confrontations did not go as planned; therefore I adapted behaviors that allowed me to keep to myself and avoid confrontation.
