Disability Course Reflection

As I take a look back to the start of this course, I knew little to nothing about the background of this course. I had friends who previously took the course, and with their input, I was still lost. They told me, “you will roll around campus using a wheelchair for the first class session.” However, what they fell to mentioned that this course will change my outlook on life and inspire me to reevaluate my vocabulary. My perspective of people with a disability has changed drastically. As a child growing up, my parents always reminded my siblings and me that, “just because people looked different from you and I, does not mean they are incapable of preforming the same activities as us.” I never knew what they meant until after completing this class. …show more content…
The group played an ice breaker where if you identified with the person in the middle, a person had to run to and link arms with the person in middle. I sat back and observed as the student with visual impaired was clueless to her surroundings. I become upset so I stepped up to intervene the icebreaker. I pointed out to the group that the ice breaker was not being inclusive to all in attendance. I suggested instead of running to middle to link arms, how about clapping once if you identify with the student in the middle. Everyone went to the middle to share one thing about themselves and having a tactile pad for the student in the middle to stand on. The ice breaker restarted and all was able to enjoy the game. I was only able to make the game inclusive with the help of this course. The smile I saw on the student that is visually impaired was priceless. Therefore I am thankful for this course. I do not suggest changing anything. I was able to take away a lot from this course and apply it to life. Although, I personally would of liked more time on campus using a wheelchair and being a person who is visually impaired instead. In conclusion I am thankful for my instructor and the course

The greatest memorable experience through the course was when students with severer disabilities attended my school. My role was to bond with the students and to help and encourage them to participate in making clocks for Christmas. From this experience I learnt to be patient, compassionate and non-judgemental.…

This course was extremely intriguing and had me hooked from the first discussion forum. It required me to venture out of my comfort zone and ask questions that others viewed as odd, but I knew was going to assist me in my studies. I can recall one specific instance where I was on twenty-four-hour duty and I began asking a police officer doing his security checks questions. It had to be two in the morning and you can tell by the exhausted look on his face when he walked through the bitter cold into our dimly lit building entrance. He spoke with very little energy as he said good morning, but once I began asking him the list of questions that I just so happened to have typed on my laptop screen he immediately perked up and began to speak with life.…

So far in EDP 611, we have discussed the term “disability” in great detail. The social and medical models are two different ways that disability is defined. After reading chapter three in the textbook, both terms make valid points, however, I feel I would side with the social construction of disability. The textbook states that over the years our view on disability has changed. For example, it was once considered normal to put people with disabilities into institutions, such as the Willowbrook State School, which is now our college.…

“There are approximately 150 academic and administrative buildings on campus(Grant)… only about nineteen buildings comply fully with the Americans with Disabilities(ADA)” (Deshpande 296). In Manasi Deshpande’s essay, A Call to Improve Campus Accessibility, argues for more college campuses to accommodate for students with disabilities. She starts off her essay with a wheelchair-bound college student at University of Texas at Austin, Wes Holloway, and his struggle with campus accessibility. Throughout her essay, Deshpande explains the benefits for people and the university, once they meet the campus requirements for disabled people.…

Every Sunday, I spend my day hanging out with two wonderful ladies! These girls live together in a small duplex on the side of town surrounded by a small community of people who have exceptionalities, and this place is called Disability Supports. I have worked here for over two years with 12 different amazing girls who have opened my eyes to how amazing life can be if you don’t focus on all the bad things and instead focus on the good. What I have noticed though over the two years that I have worked here is that not everybody has the same views as me. About a year ago, I took three of my clients to Walmart so that they could go grocery shopping.…

When the course first began I wasn’t sure what SED 125 would necessarily entail. I already had some knowledge about Special Education, but it was all pretty vague, and not at all factual. I had assumed that people who have a disability were either affected physically or mentally, and that I should try my best to help. SED 125 taught me that everybody is diverse in their own ways even if not having a disability. That there are barriers that cause people who may have visual impairments or a some form of mobility impairment and many other barriers create obstacles in their lives.…
