As I look back on my past experiences of working with children and adolescents, I realize that I have had an innate calling to mentor those who share a similar financial and social background as my own. I grew up in a single-parent household for the majority of my life with my mother and younger brother; my parents separated when I was 4 years old and the divorce was official 3 years later. Throughout all of the chaos and the absence of my father in my life, my brother and I did very well in school and participated in a wide-array of extracurricular activities. My mother had always encouraged us to be well-rounded and resilient, despite the cards that we were dealt in our past. She is the reason why I have accomplished so much in academics, sports and volunteer work. Now I 'm a first-generation, low-income student at one of the top universities in the world. I now have a duty to give back. Throughout my childhood, I participated in several art programs with Kansas City Young Audiences, which is one of the largest art-based …show more content…

My ambition to become a dentist and practice in underserved community clinics comes from my experiences living in the Texas Rio Grande Valley. My hometown, Los Fresnos, is between two of the poorest cities in America - Brownsville and Harlingen. Some areas of Los Fresnos have more than 90% of families living below the poverty line with average household incomes below $15,000. Many who live near the poverty line rely on inexpensive or government clinics to receive health care. As a resident of this town, I have been a part of these statistics, as well as my friends, family, and the students I work with.…

To begin, Casa de Amparo is an amazing care system that truly cares about the wellbeing of the children and preventing teen parents from falling into a vicious violent cycle. As I entered Casa de Amparo, I was welcomed by a smile from an assistant and transferred to a conference room where I met with other students and Jane McGuire. For weeks, I had been wanting to tour the site and volunteer as three youth from the site visited my class to learn about college life. The youth were all high school students with impoverish upbringings who had been transferred to Casa de Amparo from the foster care system. Additionally, the students had been invited by Dr. Juan Santos to tour the campus and question students on the resources available on campus, the environment, and what it was like to try to obtain a higher education.…

This weekend, November 20th-22nd I worked a poverty simulation through Mission Waco. I first went through the poverty simulation during my first semester at Baylor with my Poverty in Developing Countries class taught by Janet Dorrell. I have been learning about the causes and effects of poverty for about a year now, but for the first time I was able to look at poverty through a different perspective as I looked for ways in which it affects education. The first portion of the poverty simulation begins on Friday night; everyone is allowed to keep four of their items and is given forty-one dollars of fake money for the weekend expenses, which include, food, clothing, and potentially shelter inside. On Saturday morning, those who paid for breakfast get to eat from an assortment of chips and some coffee.…

In Damen Lopez’s book No Excuses Leadership: Nine Bold Choices Exceptional Leaders Make, Lopez writes about nine bold choices leaders can make in their school that are simple and challenging, but when implemented in their districts, can create cultural change and sustain momentum. These choices are; choose to be a servant leader, choose to be present, choose to communicate with candor, choose to crack the code of the naysayer, choose simplicity, choose to make laughing mandatory, choose to feed and be fed, and choose to go all in. A free extra nugget of information includes “move the baby!” As a high school counselor who currently serves 420 students in a poverty-ridden area of Missouri, I am constantly searching for ways to grow as a servant…

My experiences over the last six years living in NYC have shaped me into the approachable and compassionate person I am today. I have been immersed in a melting pot with many different culturally and economically diverse populations. These unique experiences have broadened my horizons and allowed me to gain valuable communication skills and the ability to connect with people from all walks of life. I searched out opportunities to give back and help the people in my community both in volunteering in hospitals, educating high school students, and interning in private practices. I even traveled with the organization Medlife, setting up a medical clinic to provide basic medical care and education to people in the poor and underserved communities surrounding Lima, Peru.…

I have been working with children for over ten years and have had many life changing experiences with them. None of those experiences have impacted my life more then what happened to me a year ago. It all happened when a parent came up to me at the school I work at and asked me to be a buddy at a program called Buddy Break. I asked, what is involved, she told me that it involved me having an open mind, warm heart and a little bit of training. With a little bit of convincing I was on board and ready to embark on a new adventure that changed my life.…

I have always been passionate about helping others, and last year, I took my ambitions to the next level when I created my own service trip to Colombia. I contacted a plethora of organization, but considering my Easter break was short, these educational organizations respectfully denied my aid. My help was finally accepted by a local convent in Bogota that houses women who are physically or sexually abused; as well as, their children who attended the convent's nursery. During Easter break, I traveled to the convent in Bogota and for ten days, I worked alongside the nuns, as well as getting to speak with the young women living in the convent. The nuns and children accepted me with open arms and gratitude.…

Prompt #1 Describe the world you come from — for example, your family, community or school — and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations. The world I've learned to know is the life in City Heights, though this is not the world I came from. The world I came from compared to the world I have now is a tremendous change. As people think about City Heights, they think about the good things, whether it's the beaches, the diversity, or the beautiful weather. Although if you think about the world my family was raised in, Southern Sudan, the only thing that comes to mind is the war that has been continuing for decades, the death of innocent people, and the hunger and thirst seen throughout the country.…

While working as a tutor at Kumon, I had the opportunity to interact with students from a wide array of educational backgrounds. Working with children not only broadened my ability to teach and communicate with others, but also helped me relate and empathize with them as their mentor. Working as a tutor helped develop my self-confidence, as I felt that I was making a difference in the academic lives of the students that I interacted with. In the same way that I view my lab mentor, Patricia G. Cipriani, as a figure of guidance, the students that I worked with viewed me as a figure of support whenever they needed help. Being the tutor, rather than the student, helped me develop perspectives on the role a mentor, or teacher, plays in a student's career.…

From day one I have been an Ox described by the Chinese zodiac as a person who can make a clear distinction between right and wrong. Similar to the ox, I am cautious, industrious, patient and honest. Additionally, I would characterize myself as someone who has integrity, persistence, and diligence. My hard working parents were brought up in Bangladesh, a third world country in South Asia with devastating poverty.…
