My Experience Of Working At The Boys And Girls Club

Improved Essays
For my service hours for Public Health class, I served at the Boys and Girls Club where I worked with children from the age of five to twelve. Upon arriving at the Boys and Girls club last week, I came across a few thoughts of how it would be to work with children. The first thought in my head was that working with children isn’t going to be challenging and might be the easiest service I have done. I expected the work to be very stress-free and less overwhelming than any other services. Another expectation I had was that volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club would be like any other experience, like the one of many times when I have tutored kids. In this paper, I will focus on how my initial thoughts were changed as I worked with the kids at the Boys and Girls Club and how this experience …show more content…
Working with children at the Boys and Girls Club was a whole new different experience for me. I faced many small challenges while volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club. Just in matters of 2 hours, one of most challenging things I noticed about working with children was that the kids at the boys and girls club were full of energy. The kids were constantly asking questions and jumping around everywhere. On the first day during the kid’s lunchtime, I was shocked to see the atmosphere; kids were constantly pulling each other, fighting, and getting up from their seats. In my opinion, it was little challenging because the kids were very messy and it was a little difficult to cope with them. Since the kids had an environment of constant movement and fighting it became harder to deal with them. Another challenge I faced was with the kids in the homework room. The kids were divided separately in different rooms,

As one of the three judges during the fight between Antonio Cruz and Felix Vargas, I believe the representative for the Boys’ Club should be announced to the audience. From what happened during the boys’ fight, Felix Vargas should be declared winner. Although both players were equally matched in skills, Vargas had more punches than Cruz. During the fight, Felix was the first person to injure his opponent. He trapped Antonio between the ropes of the ring and started punching his midribs with dynamite force.…

After doing tons of reach on the Boys & Girls Club of America I am convinced that this organization is one that goes through lots of training and preparation to get the right people ready to be apart of the legacy they are creating for our future generations. Being a former member and employee of the company I can say from my personal experience this company will do whatever it takes to make sure they have an eye for finding qualified, caring, professionals that love to work with children to help show these kids that someone cares about their future and is willing to invest time and energy on the job to do it. Majority of the Boys & Girls Clubs have all faced a common issue, a lack in the leadership department. Many of the current leaders or seasoned leaders are at a point where retirement is their next step in life and no longer have to work anymore, which has caused a gap in leadership with the new upcoming leaders of the organization.…

Volunteering at Veterans Affairs Medical Center was one of the greatest experience I've ever had. Sitting down with the elderly and getting to know them, I noticed if more teens could actually sit down and take the time to talk to an elderly person they could gain an opulent amount of knowledge. Sitting down and getting to talk an innumerable amount of veterans as I could, I was intrigued by how each person had a story of their own going through WWII. Voluntarily, I was able to contribute to the organization by having open conversations with the veterans, providing beverages, and having a great time. It wasn't till the end of the program when my perception began to change about the organization I volunteered for, it's more than just about kids…

The goal of Boys & Girls Clubs is: “to provide a world-class Club experience that assures success is within reach of every young person who walks through our doors, with all members on track to graduate from high school, on time, with a plan for the future.” As a Club staff with little weight behind me to support this goal, it makes me a stone’s throw away from being labeled a hypocrite when I almost didn’t graduate from high school, let alone have a plan for the future. My childhood wasn’t glamorous enough to brag about, nor was it full of grief-stricken struggles that would warrant a tug at any heartstrings. It was simple. I grew up with both of my parents and my brother who was 4 years my senior.…

The brief moment that I used to work as a cover teacher helped me to be flexible, committed and experience managing students in different subjects. I have worked at a boys’ only school (Harris Boys Academy, East Dulwich) for nearly a year, where I met some challenging students, but because all of us worked as a team, the school turned up to be very successful.…
