My Experience Of Tutoring

Since sophomore year, I have been staying after school in order to tutor students in math. As a member of my school’s Math Honors Society, I am required to complete eight hours of tutoring per school year. Admittedly, being busy in AP and honors classes, I was weary of having to tutor students in addition to completing 25 hours of service for Key Club.
Regardless of my initial apprehension, I was fervent in my duties. If I must do something, I may as well do it seriously. Every hour that I spent tutoring, I tried my best in order to help the students understand. Usually they were earnest as well, and it was nice to see their faces light up when they finally understood a concept. However, I didn’t feel as though there was anything remarkable

After last week’s writing, I found myself in quite a fog of insecurity. Thankfully the most recent installment of YITE brought me back to the sunny side of teaching philosophy. Reading about the art of teaching was rather inspiring even. The quote from the text, “approaching instruction in a variety of ways to provide multiple paths for students to both learn the content and develop the skills of the curriculum is artistry (pg 147),” caught my attention. Often in my life I have gotten the impression that some people consider the position of a teacher as that of merely a figurehead, an adult to put in front of a group of kids to keep them occupied.…

I appreciated the observer noticed: Anne noticed that I have become more confident in my teaching which was something I did not ask her to watch for during her observation. This meant a lot to me that she noticed my growth and the student’s growth. She said the reason why my explanations were so clear was because of my confidence. I have been struggling this semester with having confidence when I teach in tutoring and during practicum. It definitely comes and goes.…

Being a licensed snowboard instructor can have its perks; for instance, you get insane deals on all of the gear you could ever possibly need and get free lift tickets, but the most rewarding part of instructing for me is seeing how excited my students get when they finally nail the skill they’d been working so hard to master, whether it be making it down the hill without falling for the first time or landing their first air 360. That exact excitement is what drew me into this sport in the first place, and helping others achieve a sense of accomplishment and build up their riding skills is the best part of the job. Admittedly, it took me a little while to appreciate my students’ strange ways of expressing enthusiasm for learning, and for the…
