My Experience Of A Family Christmas In Dewitt

Every year on Christmas Eve the whole family woke up at 9 in the morning. We would all get ready for a family Christmas in DeWitt, Iowa at my aunt’s and uncle’s. Christmas was the only time the whole family got together. My family never had any family reunions or family Thanksgivings. So going to Christmas in Dewitt would let me see all my family members that rarely came by. The day started out with my mother in the kitchen. Every year my mother made the best vegetable pizza that she took with to our family Christmas. As my mother worked hard in the kitchen, my dad was getting everything packed into the car. My brothers and I helped my dad put all of the Christmas gifts in the back of the car. After everything was in the car and my mother …show more content…
Everyone greeted us at the front door. We would get asked questions and told how much we have grown and how much we look like our parents. After talking to a few people, we started to walk over to our great grandma. My great grandpa was sitting at a counter with her daughters and husband. The whole family knew my great grandma would not last every long because her health was declining rapidly, so having the family together for Christmas was really important, especially to her. After we finished visiting with my grandma, my family from Bellevue arrived to the house. My cousins Bailey and Brandon came in and also visited my great grandma before we all headed downstairs with our other three cousins. As dinner was being prepared, my cousins and I would hang out in the basement. All of the adults were in the basement as well playing card games. Playing card games was something the family loved to do together. They would play all different kinds of card games and would try to teach us how to play. My cousins and I would either play Uno or Gold Fish to keep us …show more content…
As the years went by, Rachael and her family became close to me. Every holiday we had somewhere to go and were accepted into Rachael’s family. For the past two years we had Christmas on Christmas Eve night. We have also grown as a family with Rachael’s daughter Dezi having two kids. Something we have done since we started Christmas at my house was playing a game called White Elephant. The game requires everyone to buy one gift and it does not matter what it is. It’s a game we always played and my family enjoyed it. Sometimes the present is funny and makes everyone laugh. We also play a very completive card game called Spoons. At our family Christmas we played a variety of different card games. My aunt and uncle from Dubuque also join us for Christmas. It may not be the same as what my brothers and I experienced, but as a family we enjoy each other’s

On Christmas Eve, I would go to my father’s side of the family, but my sister and I were closer to my grandparents on my mother’s side. I never met my grandpa on my father’s side and my grandma only lived until I was in third grade, therefore I do not have many memories of her when I was younger. During Christmas, my parents, sister and I would go to my grandparents home and as soon as we walked in the house, it smelled wonderful! There were home cooked meals, treats, presents, stockings, and everything that made Christmas warm and cozy.…

Come Thanksgiving Day, you could wake up and smell the food and you knew that when you went to get breakfast that the Macy’s day parade would be on television; my mother could not have a Thanksgiving without watching it. The aroma of all of the traditional foods consumed the entire house. Although, not all of the food was what you would call “traditional.” Many of recipes have been passed down through generations of family. For instance, my Mammy each year makes her grandmother’s pumpkin pie and corn pudding recipe. My Aunt Lori prepares most of the traditional food that is made, but all I know is that it would not be a real Thanksgiving if she did not have a big bowl of her ranch green beans prepared for us.…
