My Experience: My Internship In The Intervention Classroom

Improved Essays
My internship is at Sixth Ward Middle School in the Intervention classroom with Mrs. Andrea Landry. This class is designed to help students who are struggling in their core classes. During Intervention we compete incomplete assignments with students, provide extra assistance in all core classes, and build reading and math skills to prepare students for LEAP testing, but we also teach a lesson. However, I learned quickly that our mornings in the classroom never go as planned. There are days that we cannot teach our usual twenty minute lesson because children either need extra time to complete a test from another class or they simply need extra help in another core class so, we make adjustments to our schedule based on each particular class. …show more content…
I found myself to be excited to be working with children, but also nervous that I was in a new environment. I haven’t worked in three years, so being around new people in a working environment was going to be different than what I was used to everyday. Mrs. Andrea explained that my expectations in the classroom are teaching and helping the students with anything they need help with. She allows me to have the same amount of control over the class just like she does. She explained to the students that I’m a teacher in training and that they should seek my help just as they would seek hers. I’m thankful that she is allowing me to get the most out of my experience. On the other hand, in the beginning my main concern was that the students would have questions that I would not know the answer to. I graduated six years ago and a lot has changed within the school system since then. Unfortunately, this has happened during common core math, but thankfully my supervisor is very understanding and she explained the problem so that I would be able to assist students from our other periods, so there was no need for me to feel embarrassed. Also, my feelings of anxiety were quickly relieved when I realized how welcoming the teachers and staff are. They were interested in getting to know all about me and about my future plans upon graduating and that made me feel more at ease. My supervisor has been absent for three days and the …show more content…
I’m trying my hardest to motivate my students to be the best that I know they can be. In order to motivate my students, Mrs. Andrea and I designed a chart with fifteen squares and each time students score a 75% or higher on “TeenBiz” articles they place a sticker on their chart. Once the chart is filled students get to choose a prize. I also bought candy for students who come to class with their learning logs complete, and who are prepared and willing to learn. At the moment, the chart seems to be working perfectly as one student has already filled his chart and most are on their way. However, I’m still working on motivating my eighth graders, but I’m confident that with a little more encouragement and motivation these students will be as confident in themselves as I am in

Not all teachers are capable of doing that effectively, but I want to be one of those teachers that can. Every Wednesday, I looked forward to coming to my Developmental Concerns and Family Partnerships class to learn about the various disabilities students may have. After leaving that class each week, I felt motivated to become a better educator who could be flexible and understanding. Until you have interacted with a child that has a disability, it is hard to understand what all it entails. Somedays, I still have a hard time comprehending some of the behaviors that I see students engage in, including my own children.…

My CT’s planner has little notes about the lessons and activities she planned to teach. She also had different colored dots next to each note. The color-coded dots meant whether or not she needed to prepare the stations, prep the student for a new lesson, or no preparation at all. After watching the planning session and helping cut papers for a couple of assignment, I realized the dedication and hard work these teachers had to put in to create such an enriched learning environment. I found out that the first year of teaching is going to require a lot of overtime but over the years it will be easier and you will be able to have insightful information, lessons, and activities to share with one another.…

I felt that taking time and trying to help him review for that test really did the trick for him. When I first did this career field, I really didn’t know what to expect, but I read the rubric so I can be as polite and deferential as possible. Now that I have gone nine weeks with this job, I learned a lot about what it takes to be an SSL. You need to the patience to help a student out, even if they behave terribly on you. Sometimes they’ll realize that what they are doing is wrong once you start ignoring their verbal violence, and they’ll respect you since they actually do need help.…

The teacher shows the parents the student’s progress academically and they also talk about their behavior. Which is very hard to determine because there is no rubric for that and then there is a list of things the teacher can suggest to the parent to keep helping the students at home with. The conference with each set of parents last up to fifteen minutes and involves a lot of taking within that time period. So towards the end of the day I had the task of calling each student back to see if they could tie their shoe and possibly help teach them a little. It was fun talking to each child and then I marked if they could or couldn’t.…

There were many times that students had to ask Mrs. Hibma what the question was again because they forgot. By having the question on the interactive board, it would allow the student to be able to read the question if they had forgotten it. However, overall I would keep everything else the same for this lesson. It was very organized, and controlled. Being able to use unique techniques and activities in the classroom I think is very important for learning.…

The 7th and 8th graders struggle in homework so she has implemented a self- tracking system where the students hand in their homework and check it off themselves on a posted chart. This has increased the amount and quality of the work she is receiving. My students do not want to be the only one who is not doing their homework. Situations like the one I was in happen in classrooms across the country every day. Although there is no simple solution, there are techniques that we can use to go about beginning to solve this major problem in the education system. Some of the ways we can fix this issue is to have teachers be held more accountable for their actions, be observed in a way that they can’t prepare for, and be given seminars on how to be objective towards their students. My experience with that English teacher taught me a lesson that I will never forget. In the beginning of the year, she made sure that the Hispanic and Caucasian nationalities felt and saw a low form of what the African American race went through during the…

After doing it week after week I improved and started to understand how to better help those kids. I learned that this class worked best when I would let them share something enjoyable about themselves for every class. One week I was not able to go the guidance class and the teacher came up to me and said the students were devastated and missed me. Knowing this also helped me in this classroom it helped me know they enjoy my company and are benefiting from my lessons. I also got to spend one on one time with…

My main goal was to have the students participating more and motivated to complete tasks in class. During the first few weeks, this was challenging and I remember getting very frustrated. There was a point during my internship where I was at my widths end trying to think of ways to motivate the students because nothing seemed to work. However, one day I decided to reward the students with candy for completed assignments and I created reward charts for TeenBiz progression. Moreover, every morning we begin class with reading a PARCC like reading passage followed by questions before we assist students in their other core classes.…
