The field of Special Education is an exciting field to study. Within course SE7001-8: Assessment in Special Education, I have learned a new way of looking and approaching certain situations within the realm of special education. Through the research necessary for this course, it allowed me to gain knowledge and helped to prepare me mentally for the future of being a Director of Special Education and offered insight of how school personnel, administration, paraprofessionals, and various assessments work within the school system. The course provided me with a solid path and foundational view of how administrations work within a school district. Throughout the course, the lessons, readings, and assignments equipped me to become a better …show more content…
Although I have not mastered the skill of properly assessing and evaluating students to receive special education services, I understand that in order to become proficient in this area, I need to maintain and apply the skills that were given throughout the course. Some of the skills that I have learned are how to properly identify a child who may need special educational services, assess and evaluate students for special education and how to properly hold an IEP. These skills are important because it is necessary as a special educator to know when and how to evaluate a child who may need additional services.
Students with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) face significant challenges in the classroom. Researcher Kathleen Lynne Lane has noted that students with EBD are often characterized by disruptive social behaviors and exhibit poorer attendance rates, higher drop-out rates, and higher rates of grade retention “than any other disability

I have the skill of looking through multiple lenses, instead of a pre conceived notion. Throughout my academic career I have immersed myself in the classroom and have become interactive allowing me to express myself as well as being open to hearing the opinions of my fellow classmates. I have learned to work together as well as individually to analyze information and attain ideas, which I found is the process of critical thinking. The knowledge that I absorbed during my education at the University of Washington has given me a better understanding; I have honed the cognitive processes and skill of advanced critical thinking. I have chosen two documents that illustrate critical thinking. Ultimately, I have learned that the most successful thinking happens when multiple minds work together to construct meaning. Instructors have pushed me to think outside the box. The documents I have discussed involve skills that acquire me to collaborate, interpret, analyze, become open minded and attain direction. All of these skills define critical thinking and will benefit me in assessing multiple perspectives as well as see the value in intellectual

The factors of the dilemma include inadequate evaluation procedures, teacher bias in referrals, and failure to consider the many reasons why students are unable to meet the academic expectations of the school system. Many of these reasons can be accommodated or fixed if the evaluation process was completed effectively. The problem initially begins with the evaluation process. Stakeholders have inadequate evaluation procedures. Federal law offers little guidance in the process of assessment and referral for special education services (Vallas, 2009).…

The topics discussed and learned throughout an undergraduate education will ultimately benefit society through the procedural and careful actions of those students. Thus, the critical thinking taught at a collegiate level will benefit and help the societal issues apparent today, thereby shaping the best self. For example, in Bell Hooks “Teaching Critical Thinking”, she discusses how college is the only space that is able to teach critical thinking and the skills needed to do so. Hooks states that “keeping an open mind is an essential requirement of critical thinking” (Hooks 10). This statement contributes to the ideal that the skills learned from critical thinking will benefit society, as open-mindedness is an essential skill to learn in order to function properly with other people due to the ever-changing societal opinions.…

I am good at looking at others work and project and “poking holes” but I need to work more on looking at my own work/thoughts more critically and make sure my understanding is correct and holistic. Even though I know my way isn’t the only way or even the best way, I need to continue to be open minded and consider a variety of different options (aka school of thoughts). 2. Response to Intervention: Tirzah Carroll Reinhardt University Special education is no longer the sole responsibility of a special needs educator. General education teachers are now finding their classrooms operating under the inclusion philosophy, which believes that all students, regardless of type or severity of their disability, have a right to receive instruction in a general classroom (Taylor, Smiley, & Richard, 2009). In fact, general education teachers are involved in the learning disability identification process long before these students ever receive an individualized education program (IEP). Schools are now implementing a systematic approach for monitoring student progress called the Response to…

Critical thinking could provide a safer and more productive future for the upcoming adults. State education departments require so much essential material to be taught in such little time that critical thinking can’t be incorporated into the classes. In the following statement, Frank Breslin says, “In order to cover the curriculum, courses must be taught quickly, superficially, and uncritically, the infallible way of boring students. This is a great source of frustration to teachers, who would rather teach their courses in depth in order to give students an informed understanding of the issues involved”(Why Public Schools Don't Teach Critical Thinking-Part 1, Frank Breslin). This statement alone proves that there needs to be a change in the school system.…

Critical thinking is not only a process, but a skill that develops over the course of a person’s life. Dr. Linda Elder, the Assistant Director of the Center for Critical Thinking, created a stage theory of critical thinking development that defines critical thinking into six stages. In reference to the article by Linda Elder and Richard Paul “Critical Thinking Development: A Stage Theory,” I believe that stage four, the practicing thinker, best represents my development as a thinker. As previously mentioned, Dr. Linda Elder’s stage theory of critical thinking development consists of six stages. In stage one, Linda Elder argues that a majority of people begin heavily embedded in this stage of the “unreflective thinker.”…
