Over the last 8 weeks I have come to know and spent my time with a very hardworking and respectful group of 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade students at Naramake Elementary School in Norwalk, CT. It has been a very memorable experience, one that I will cherish forever. I went into this experience thinking that I knew a lot about the teaching profession and had previous experiences in the schools, but I left knowing a lot more than I could have ever imagined. I learned so much not only from my cooperating teacher, Lori Anrico as well as the Naramake staff, but most importantly I learned from the students.

I immediately knew that I needed to familiarize myself with the students if I was going to be able to connect with them and teach them the material necessary for them to succeed in their appropriate grades. I got to know my students within the first week and a half of school from simple conversations and small art projects. The conversations were

Having the experience to perform these tasks has really been an eye opening experience. There is much more that a Special Education teacher does on a daily basis, than what most people could imagine. Being able to see firsthand what comes along with the job and how complicated things can be has been very beneficial. My cooperating teacher reworked her schedule numerous times until she got it the way that she wanted it. Together, we created multiple (9) schedules for the paraprofessionals in the building. It was a very challenging and time consuming task; just when we thought we had it all worked out we realized a time conflict and all of the schedules needed to be adjusted. It was frustrating, but once it was all worked out and the students had the assistance that they needed it was a rewarding

Walking into Kekionga Middle School I noticed a lot of differences from schools that I had visited previously. The most visible one being the school’s population and location. I had never observed at an urban school and have never felt such a cultural difference between me and the students. With a school population that was so diverse and not within the same background as I was, I immediately started thinking about my future teaching career and what I would do in that kind of atmosphere. I later on asked Mrs. Parker why she chose this school and said that it was because she went to Fort Wayne Community Schools all of her life, so she did not feel change at all.…

Pree gives new teachers in dealing with students with special needs is lots of patience. There has to be a love for the job or there is no point in keeping it. She believes special education is more challenging than general education; that while there are less students, there are more layers with the classroom composed of students of different grade levels and abilities. Another factor of being a special education teacher is paperwork, she feels that there is more paperwork in the job than teaching. A tip for teaching children with special needs, and children in general is make learning fun, no child will learn from boring.…

My field observations took place at Renaissance Charter School at Central Palm. I honestly had a wonderful experience and I really enjoyed my time there. I was assigned to Ms. Pickholtz’s 1st grade class. When I first arrived to the charter school I was extremely nervous and a little anxious because just the thought of actually helping a teacher run a class seemed scary to me because I felt like I would do a horrible job at it. However, I was welcomed by both the teacher and the class…

The role of the student in the RTI change initiative was very limited. The pupils selected for intervention could not choose whether or not to take these classes. Though test scores were consulted, students, themselves, were not consulted during the planning or implementation of the initiative. Students were merely “potential beneficiaries of change” (Fullan, 2006, p. 170). As beneficiaries, these learners were only to be engaged as recipients of the remediation services being offered to them.…

Before taking this course and being out in the field for 20 hours, special education was not my ideal teaching job. Special education was always intimidating to me because there is so much important information that is needed. IEP’s, parents, and goal setting are just a few to name that intimidated me until now. After getting to experience being in a special education room with the students and asking Nicole Degroot questions about these topics, I now I feel that special education may be the positon for me. From the first day of my observation hours, Mrs. Degroot made me feel completely welcome and comfortable, which made the experience that much better.…
