Uncomfortability with services rendered Many studies have shown that early detection, prevention and treatment of chronic diseases is crucial to extending life. Kidney disease can be detected by a blood test to check glomerular filtration rate, an urine test to check for protein and checking one’s blood pressure (National Institute of Health, 2008). One instance in the book“Mama Might Be Better off Dead” where I felt uncomfortable with the service rendered has a social worker was when Robert did a urine test and renal biopsy. The urine test revealed protein in Roberts’s blood and the renal biopsy performed showed focal glomerulosclerosis,( a disease scarring the kidney 's filtering units glomeruli (National Kidney Foundation, 2016).Both…

Being able to attend Boston Universities CSWE Accredited Online Masters of Social Work Program opens possibilities that I would have never thought imaginable. Boston University is recognized for academic excellence across the country, what I feel is their most important quality is that students are given wide range of learning opportunities to allow for studying in a way that is convenient and comfortable to them. During my undergraduate career, I quickly learned that large classes that went on for long periods of time did little to benefit me educationally. Online classes allowed for a true understanding of the work presented and gave me the opportunity to put forth my best effort in each piece of work submitted. In addition to taking multiple…

Understanding the concept of theory as it relates to a specific service user group is paramount in social care practice in order for practitioners to understand behaviours, make appropriate assessment, plan and provide the highest possible level of care (Mullins, 2014). According to (Wadensten, 2006) theories exist to challenge current practice, create new approaches to practice and remodel the structure of rules and principles. Theory is useful in social care practice as it provides an insight into understanding social issues as they affect older people in the society. (Ryan, 2009) argues that the use of theories in practices enhances service users’ outcomes and creates changes. Theory explains the reason why an action has resulted in a particular…

Currently, the initial visit would involve the social worker ascertaining five principles of capacity of the older person included in the Mental Capacity Act (2005), unless ‘it is established he lacks capacity’ (Mental Capacity Act 2005 c9 p1 s1 (2)). This is in conjunction with the Care Act (2014), which states that support would be via ‘any person whom the adult asks the authority to involve or, where the adult lacks capacity to ask the authority to do that, any person who appears to the authority to be interested in the adult’s welfare’ (Care Act 2014: c23 p1 s9 (5)). Therefore, unless other provisions have been made, the responsibility may be given to partners or families regarding care needs. However, research suggests that the…

This was a hard movie for me to watch because I struggle with watching such overt racism. It disturbs me to see such unnecessary violence at the hands of the people we are supposed to trust to protect and serve us. I do not suffer from anxiety very often, but this movie made me very anxious. Seeing such brutality and people begging for their lives for no obvious reason is beyond something I can understand. Discrimination and racism, have always been hard for me to comprehend because I grew up in a very diverse neighborhood in Madison.…

University of Maryland School of Social Work Office of Admissions Personal Statement 1. As a future Social Worker being trained to address the daily struggles and challenges of those who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty, particularly those with disabilities would be most rewarding. People with disabilities experience stigma and scrutiny due to a lack of public awareness. Many times people with disabilities will choose to not reveal their disability to the general public, although some disabilities have a visible feature that cannot be hidden. When a disability is visible it is easier for the individual to be stigmatized, but when a disability is not visible they are less likely to be stigmatized.…

What a fulfilling ending to a beginning, I totally enjoyed this first part of practicum, although there was a setback in the beginning, I came through it, and so I can prove Carl Rogers (1961) theory in which he believes that if an individual attained self-actualisation they would be a fully functioning person living "the good life". By this, he means that the individual would have a positive healthy psychological outlook, trust their own feelings and have congruence in their lives between self and experience (Rogers 2004). The social work practicum is a fundamental aspect of social work education that provides students with the opportunity to apply the theoretical foundations of the profession to the practice arena (BSc. My understanding of health care social work is that it is the process in which clients are assisted by a social worker in accessing care and education as it relates to their health. The social worker assesses the patient needs and advocates for the care that is pertinent to the patients’ medical, and physical well-being. According to Gehlert & Browne (2012), the foundation of social work in health care was based on the changes in the demographics of the population during the 19th and 20th centuries, along with attitudes about how the sick should be treated, including where treatment should occur, and attitudes towards the role of social and psychological factors in health. Social work in health care is inclusive of the provision of…
