There are over 250 ethnic groups in Nigeria but each and every group believes strongly in hierarchy. Respect is given according to age. Because age is considered to confer wisdom, “older people are granted respect” (kwintessential). The oldest person at any gathering is often celebrated and appointed as the leader. Likewise, when greeting an older person the appropriate etiquette must be followed. Some tribes like the Yorubas prostrate when greeting an elderly person and avoid making eye contact. Respect is a very crucial element in the Nigerian Society. It is also ill-mannered to refer an elder person by their name. As a Nigerian, I was taught from childhood to respect elderly people and greet them as required. Proverbs and stories are used to educate children relevance of respecting elderly people. It is unsurprising that we do. Nigeria is a “super-power” in Africa and as a fellow Nigerian I am proud of Nigeria. The country is endowed with enormous amount of natural resources like crude oil. Nigeria is currently the sixth largest producer of oil in the world. And Nigeria is also currently the richest country in Africa. Nigerians take pride in their national soccer team alias the “Super Eagles.” They hold the Nigerian national anthem to heart; students sing it every school day in their respective schools. Unfortunately, some Nigerians have lost any sense of national pride towards their government. The government is said to be corrupt, unreliable and insensitive to their citizens.
