However, because of my early familiarity with writing and my continuing excellence in literacy I did quite well. Whereas most of my fellow students had a difficult time understanding the complex formats and sometimes even the simplest sentence structure, I excelled. My Spring semester of my Freshman year, I had my first major run in with an academic research paper, in the form of a ten page Chicago style essay. The topic was to be about a specific era in which we had learned about through the beginning of Western Civilizations. Not only that but we also had to also have two separate 4 page essays about specific occurrences during the time of which our main topic was to be about, all of these were to be typed in Chicago style formatting per the rules of being a History major as I am. If you are not familiar with Chicago style, be glad, it is by far one of the most difficult formats for a paper of any kind, specifically a research paper. While I was not familiar with the style and we had to choose our own era and there were all of these additional add ons, I always seemed to find a way how to do it. I looked through books, and read the sample paper that was given to us and at every check point I was the student that was asked to hand around my copy to see how it should be done.
