My Experience In My Writing Career

Improved Essays
Many of my colleagues will tell you they did not, and do not enjoy and sort of writing. Most cite their bad experiences beginning with the American public school system. I, however, had a different beginning to my writing career. Beginning early, with my writings of candy colored equines, changed and helped my early transitioning to academic writing. Therefore, thought the topic may be tedious, and very boring, I still manage to take some pleasure in writing. Unlike my peers who tend to groan or cringe at the mention of the MLA format. When I was young, one of my favorite things to do, besides play Barbies, of which I was the queen, I loved making of stories of fantastical worlds and multicolored horses. I loved to write these stories because …show more content…
However, because of my early familiarity with writing and my continuing excellence in literacy I did quite well. Whereas most of my fellow students had a difficult time understanding the complex formats and sometimes even the simplest sentence structure, I excelled. My Spring semester of my Freshman year, I had my first major run in with an academic research paper, in the form of a ten page Chicago style essay. The topic was to be about a specific era in which we had learned about through the beginning of Western Civilizations. Not only that but we also had to also have two separate 4 page essays about specific occurrences during the time of which our main topic was to be about, all of these were to be typed in Chicago style formatting per the rules of being a History major as I am. If you are not familiar with Chicago style, be glad, it is by far one of the most difficult formats for a paper of any kind, specifically a research paper. While I was not familiar with the style and we had to choose our own era and there were all of these additional add ons, I always seemed to find a way how to do it. I looked through books, and read the sample paper that was given to us and at every check point I was the student that was asked to hand around my copy to see how it should be done. That’s not to say I didn’t find it difficult, I did. However, I didn’t seem to

In the Introduction to "They Say/I Say": The Moves That Matter in Academic Writing, Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein give formats intended to make it simpler for students to compose their own particular essays easier. In particular, Graff and Birkenstein contend that the sorts of writing formats they offer helps the understudies assemble the paper's structure they need to start writing about. As Graff and Birkenstein themselves put it, "brilliant". As the authors themselves said on page 2: “But these deeper habits of thought cannot be put into practice unless you have a language for expressing them in clear, organized ways.” Although a few individuals believe that these templates will take away the creativity and uniqueness of their written work, Graff and Birkenstein demand that their templates will assist " writing become more original and creative, not less."…

It’s interesting, really, to see some of my old papers from middle and high school. I look back and laugh at the time, maybe around the third grade, when my classmates and I would groan and complain about having to write an ENTIRE PARAGRAPH. Now, after years of writing significantly longer academic papers that stretch far beyond a simple paragraph, my style and the depth of my topics have evolved based on what I’ve read. The most important pastime for anyone who wishes to write, unsurprisingly, is to read a wide variety of material, starting at a young age. Studies have shown that children who read more than their peers exhibit a larger vocabulary as well as more complex writing styles.…

I have never enjoyed writing because I don't think I am good writer. I never want to sit down and write what ever is on my mind. English is one of my toughest subjects because since I’m not good at it, I haven’t taken the time to learn it properly, which makes it hard. In 8th grade, we were assigned a Research Paper. We were suppose to write at least 6-8 pages.…

(Murray 2). This essay was written in October, yet it clearly represents an ability to provide context for a quote. This is a skill that didn’t need to be worked on, unlike MLA formatting, which is a skill that many ninth graders did not know coming into this year. For example, my very first essay this year was a book review on The Nazi Hunters by Neal Bascomb, a book I had read over the summer. This essay lacks any sign of proper MLA formatting, with a bolded title, no date, and no page numbers.…

Well, I consider myself to be a decent writer, even though writing is not my strong point. Therefore, as I have come to the completion of my degree, I have learned numerous writing skills along the way. I learned the MLA style, when I started taking my basics in college and the APA style for my upper division courses. At times I get confused on the formats as I consider them to be similar in some ways. Furthermore, they differ and each has its own different style of quoting and citation in articles, books, phrases, etc.…

By looking back at my writing experiences, I can tell that writing does not come naturally to me and find it to be a real challenge. I may think I did well while writing but in reality I did horrible. It takes me a while to write a paper then other people and there tends to be plenty of problems that try to slow me down. One of the hardest problems I have while writing is trying to find the right words to say. Every time I write I always take longer than anyone else because I always second guess what I just wrote and have to rewrite what I am trying to say.…

From time to timer, as I reminisce on how my high school English courses were composed, I recall that students were essentially told what to write about and how to structure their assignments. In essence, when it came to writing papers, students were not given considerable freedom to express his or her thoughts. Ultimately and to some extent this instructional strategy hindered my writing, creative process, and interpretation development; although, I am grateful for being exposed to general writing concepts that provided a basis of how to start a writing project. Moreover, when I started attending English college courses I noticed that writing and reading techniques, depending on the course and instructor, began to gradually change. Most of…

My History As A Writer Throughout my lifetime I have come to love and absolutely hate writing. The reasoning of the assignment or topic has a lot to do with my affinity and disgust. Although learning new things, like writing, was something that I loved doing in elementary school, that all changed when it was daily implemented. As an art form I recently come to love writing down my thoughts, ideas, opinions and stories.…

To me, writing has always been busy work and something that teachers only used to create grades. My writing experience in high school was very limited to one category in: practice AP essays. The writing I did in class was always preparing for AP exams and was very fact based. Most essays, such as history, were only used to show that I knew the material and weren’t graded on how good the writing was. I didn’t feel like I had any freedom to stray away from the format that the AP graders expected because I didn’t want that to affect my score.…

If you were to ask me about my high school writing experience, I would tell you that I did not have much experience. We did not have any classes at my school that were specifically writing classes. At my high school, we just had regular English classes where we would occasionally do a few papers in. My English teacher senior year was a great person, but did not necessarily teach us a lot about proper styles of writing papers. Coming into college English, I did not feel well prepared with what to expect for a college level writing class.…
