ICU Reflective Essay

Over the past four years, I have worked for a medical company that produces equipment specializing in organ support therapy for the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The learning curve to grasp a firm clinical understanding of the device was long and difficult. However, it has been very inspirational to work in the ICU and interact with the acutely ill patient population. Before working for a healthcare company, my exposure to the healthcare industry was very limited. However after having the privilege working in the ICU setting, I have found a new found passion. In general, most individuals are not raised in the hospital setting. We find passion in activities that we are exposed to in our youth. We were both slightly puzzled by her comment but excited by her fighting spirit. The nurse explained to me that she is not out of the woods yet but this is progress. Never before have I been so emotionally excited and drained at the same time. This experience gave me an insight into patient care and how rewarding it can be for a nurse. During my experience working in the ICU for a healthcare provider, I have learned that nursing can be one of the most hard and rewarding professions. In the past, I had very limited exposure to hospitals to understand what it means to be a nurse. I understood some basic roles and responsibilities in the profession but never the depth of pain and gratitude that it can bring as a career. However up until the past few years being exposed to the in depth clinical setting, the nursing profession has created a very inspirational career that I desire to achieve. Whatever nursing profession an individual works in, this person can contribute to society through patient care and truly change lives. I look forward to the opportunity to become a
