In April of 2015 I interviewed for a summer job at Yellowstone Bear World, but by the end of the interview I was offered a three month long merchandising internship in the gift shop. Throughout this internship I created a few goals for myself. My main goal for this internship was to help me focus on a route to take for my future career. I pondered the career option to go into merchandising for a while, but I didn’t have any experience in merchandising or retail to know for sure if I could be happy in that field. When I accepted the internship I was excited for the experience to find out if I could see myself doing this as a career. I have learned to identify customers who are in need and to help them with their needs. I have also developed the skill of creating an environment that both customers and employees can enjoy. Another skill I’ve gained is analyzing reports and evaluating them to improve a company’ revenue. This last skill I have gained has come from working on my intern project. This project has required me to analyze, describe, and interpret reports made on the gift shop’s apparel. This project will last until the end of my internship, but once it is completed I will have learned all the steps on how to make decisions for a business with regards to report …show more content…
Becoming the merchandising intern has helped me grow and become more prepared for my future career. Not only has this experience led me down a career path I enjoy, it has heled me develop leadership, communication, and business skills that I can take to any company I work for in the future. I believe that the hard work, effort, and willing attitude I have shown at Yellowstone Bear World will help provide me with an offer of a future full-time employment.
To any student that is considering an internship, my advice is to take it. Internships provide great learning experiences. They also help prepare a person to work in any desired career field. I also would like to advise anyone who is considering an internship to remember that any internship will be hard. However, the amount of effort a person puts into it is the amount they will get out of it. If the intern can stay focused on his or her goals, then the internship can become an immensely rewarding
