Transition To Adulthood

“Childhood means simplicity. Look at the world with the child 's eye it is very beautiful”(Satyarthi). For the most part our childhood is something that at the time goes unnoticed by us, but as time goes on it becomes cherished. Growing up is a significant factor of life and for some the transition to adulthood is a long process of hardships, responsibilities, or circumstances and for me what helped the transition was my trip to Colombia. Being globally aware isn’t usually a part of childhood and is what can mold our identity, which creates a huge area of growth into becoming an adult and understanding our surrounding. I not only grew as person but learned to be considerate and the value of work and responsibilities. This event in my life …show more content…
I was pleasantly surprised because what I expected to be just a fun vacation turned out to be a reality check, an experience of a lifetime, and a memory full of life lessons. Going on an airplane with just my cousin whom is the same age as me was a new journey for me to embark and at the time I figured it was going to be all blissful but I didn’t realize that what I would gain would be much more. I had family there but since they were much older it wasn’t only hard to connect with them but they were really strict. I thought that waking up at six in the morning for school was bad but I had to wakeup even earlier since I was with my great-aunt and uncle and they had a set routine. The stubbornness that I had didn’t last long since on the second day there we jogged and ran for two hours at five in the morning this was my first step into branching off of childhood and adolescents because discipline was necessary for me to leave a good impression in my family and not feel sluggish. There was obviously things that made me more motivated such as the coffee to do well and not only obey but do what ever possible to make my family feel …show more content…
Although I’m fluent in Spanish I still had what was called an American accent, which made it harder for me to fit in and I had to learn how to deal with that. Waking up extremely early, showering in cold water, learning different recipes and how to cook where only a few of the things I had to get accustomed to. In the beginning I was ungrateful for the people I had in my life so instead of wanting to visit my grandmother I would want to go sight seeing or visit friends but realized the importance of family and visited her multiple times little did I know that would be the last time I got to see her . Later on after following a strict routine while at the same time enjoying my trip and learning about the culture by participating in the flower

The article, “Race, Ethnicity, and Emerging Adulthood: Retrospect and Prospects”, by Moin Syed and Lauren L. Mitchell was conducted in 2013 at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, MN. The researchers state, “The purpose of this article is to fill this gap by conducting a conceptual review of the literature on race, ethnicity, and emerging adulthood. In addition, the purpose of this article is to provide a review of what is known, and what remains to be known, about the role of race and ethnicity for emerging adulthood” (Mitchell & Syed, 2013, p. 83). The intent of this study was to determine what considers an individual to be classified as emerging adulthood based on the contribution to the family and social class levels. Researchers defined the term emerging adulthood as a term “that applies to a developmental period of the life span, roughly of age 18-29” (Mitchell & Syed, 2013, p. 83).…

I also learned to respect my environment. My experience cleaning bathrooms, doing laundry, and washing dishes after my sisters is something I consider when people do these things for me. I learned not to be one of the students that made ketchup designs on the lunch trays. I remember to genuinely thank the maids in hotels for folding my towels and straightening my room. From chores I learned to truly appreciate the work people do for me and how to reciprocate those efforts.…

Although I am not yet 18, in many ways I am already an adult. I spend at least as much time working and attending school on a daily basis as someone with a standard 9-5 job devotes to their profession, typically more. I pay taxes and bills, make major decisions about my life independently, and regularly take responsibility for younger children. Becoming an adult is a gradual change. Turning 18 in and of itself has no true significance.…

Rites of passage have been used by almost all cultures since the beginning to mark the transition an individual takes from youth to adulthood. In many ancient cultures it has involved ceremonies often religious in nature. In typical modern day American society, the movement from adolescence to adulthood also comes with certain rites of passage. In the late teen years many youths have the desire for more independence. Many will get an afterschool job; this gives them some financial freedom.…

Moving to the U.S was one of the many life changing experiences I have ever encountered. Some say that learning a completely different culture especially the language may be difficult, well, they were right! Coming to America did not only come with struggles, changes, and lessons, but it also brought blessings. I think that if you turn a situation around, for the better, you somehow become more optimistic about the situation itself. Talking about these attributes that came into my life will not only explain entirely where I come from, but really how each helped me become the person that I’m today.…

    Coming Of Age Changes

I don’t think that coming of age changed completely since 1967 because only a small proportion of young adults finish college and know what to do in life for example getting married; people wait when they are mature and understand the mindset of what and how life works. Our generation has new challenges such as age: how kids can’t work or drink in a young age, finishing school, and marriage: like I said when people are in the adulthood phase. 3. Agency Agency, as a problematic, differs from the problematic of freedom. Whereas freedom is more concerned with lack of external constraints and freedom from oppressive laws or societal structures, agency relates to an individual’s ability to make decisions that are good for them and are likely to bring about positive results. Whether or not a person has agency changes the way we think about their freedom and about saving them. Humans can be denied agency from the outside, in that their ability to make their own decisions and have others respect them is not present, or actually lack agency from the inside, as in the case of young children who need guidance to understand how to act in their best self-interest.…
